The Associate Director, Digital Communications (Email and Web) manages and oversees the email marketing program and serves as the project lead on maintenance of website content for Alumni Relations and Development (ARD) at Northwestern University. As the frontline email coordinator, this position will work with the director of digital communications to create and execute an email marketing strategy for ARD; collaborate with ARD teams to develop email execution goals, timelines, and success metrics in order to deliver a best-in-class email experience for alumni and partners; and identify and analyze competitor e-mail and digital communications including strategy, creative, and promotional innovations. As ARD’s website editor, this position is responsible for developing engaging content and managing updates for the Northwestern Alumni Association website and the University’s giving website. This position is also responsible for gathering and analyzing email and web data and creating and delivering regular reports to the Director, the Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications, and program teams.
Manage and Coordinate ARD’s Email Marketing Program
Audit email usage across ARD and continually monitor channel saturation
Edit and approve outgoing email to alumni audiences for accuracy, best practices, and adherence to established policies, strategy, and compliance with University guidelines.
Maintain the ARD schedule of broadcast e-mails to alumni and other constituents and work with University partners to coordinate timing of large email campaigns.
Develop and continually update documentation of process guidelines and usage policies for email marketing
Create and implement a comprehensive testing protocol to ensure perfect look and accuracy
Serve as a staff resource for use of the broadcast email tool and related technologies, including hosting occasional learning sessions and creating support materials to augment training
Serve as ARD’s representative on University-wide email marketing coordination efforts
Develop and Execute Digital Marketing Strategies
Measure, track, analyze, and report on the effectiveness of the email channel and website usage
Develop and execute protocols for data gathering, testing, and optimization of email and web-based delivery vehicles to cultivate engagement and conversions
Develop innovative digital marketing strategies and seek out relevant new practices from outside of higher education
Stay up to date as the ARD expert for using the iModules Encompass platform as a marketing tool
Manage and Coordinate Web-based Updates and Content
Update and manage the content on the Northwestern Alumni Association (NAA) website and the giving website
Approve content administration rights for ARD staff contributors
Develop and edit content submitted by subject matter experts across ARD
Work collaboratively with writers, designers, content producers, and subject-matter experts to create high-quality digital engagement content for alumni
Strategically assist with new forms of web-based content
Collaborate with Marketing and Communications team and internal clients on developing strategies and creative approaches for digital communications
Work with Marketing and Communications team members to establish project timelines and ensure project solutions meet defined goals
Build and maintain strong partnerships with stakeholders throughout the ARD and across the University, including schools and units
Serve as liaison to the University’s Office of Global Marketing and Communications for email and website projects and partnerships
Perform other duties as assigned
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major such as journalism, communications, marketing, or related; or appropriate combination of education and experience.
Four to seven years of professional experience in digital marketing and communications, including website content management and email marketing to multiple constituent groups or other relevant experience is required.
Experience managing branded digital media accounts, copyediting, and editorial processes
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Proficiency with content management systems, email and event management tools, HTML/CSS, Google Analytics, Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word), and Adobe Photoshop
Demonstrated expertise in email deliverability best practices, including mobile and responsive design
Ability to analyze and derive insight from data through A/B testing and other methodologies in order to inform decisions
Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively on a team
Excellent attention to detail and effective project management skills in a fast-paced environment
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Master’s degree in communications, marketing, or related field
Experience in higher education advancement or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Advanced knowledge of iModules’s Encompass CMS, email, events, and giving tools or a similar platform
Experience with constituent database management
Knowledge of current Internet standards, including email marketing, CAN-SPAM regulations
Understanding of digital marketing, including search, SEO, social, mobile, and content marketing
Knowledge and understanding of Northwestern University and its organizational structure
