The College of Education and Human Service Professions (CEHSP) at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) is seeking a Communications Specialist to manage its external and internal communications. The incumbent will promote a positive public image and work collaboratively with UMD's Office of University Marketing and Public Relations (UMPR) to control the dissemination of information internally and externally to CEHSP.
The following duties are typical for this position: Coordinate all marketing and public relation activities within CEHSP - 35% • Work under the UMD brand to ensure a consistent voice to represent CEHSP in media. • Craft and implement a marketing and public relation strategy for CEHSP communications. Maintain and adjust strategy as needed. • While following UMD brand standards, create marketing and promotional materials, including but not limited to brochures, flyers, posters, photographs, and online content. • Write, edit, and review for copy and content to ensure clarity and accessibility of message. • Make recommendations and implements opportunities to use communications strategically across the college and to external stakeholders. • Tracks and compiles CEHSP work and activities to write regular and year-end publications. • Coordinate efforts with UMPR
Develop, organize, and manage content for CEHSP website. Work with departments and programs within CEHSP to assist them in content management. Work with CEHSP IT Professional on overall web design and delivery. - 20% • Modify website copy for target audience and ensure accessibility compliance. • Audit content of website and update accordingly. • Analyze web usage trends such as website traffic, traffic sources, bounce rates, top pages, conversion rates, interactions per visit, etc. and adjust content based on this data. • Partners with college leaders to find ways to strategically use website and online media to drive engagement with the college. • Adhere to web best practices and work within the UMD web structure and templates managed by Information Technology Systems and Services (ITSS) and UMPR
Source, research, write, and edit stories featuring CEHSP students, alumni, faculty, and staff. -20% • Develop content for news articles and press releases for feature stories. • Stories will be for internal and/or external audiences, and may be published in media such as websites, mass email, social media, and press releases. • Research, source, and partner with relevant online and print publications for dissemination of CEHSP communications. • Respond to requests for information from the college, partners with relevant units on campus to gather necessary data/information for requests. • Maintain and present metrics on story and press release publication to demonstrate success of communications and strategy.
Plan and implement a social media strategy for CEHSP -15% • Create regular content for Facebook, Twitter, lnstagram, digital signage, and other relevant platforms. • Train social media contacts within CEHSP on how to convey consistent CEHSP brand. • Develop, adapt, and enforce written guidelines and policies for using social media within CEHSP in conjunction with other relevant UMD and University of Minnesota (UMN) policies and procedures. • Maintain and present metrics on engagement and social media impressions to demonstrate success of communications and strategy.
Collaborate with other marketing and public relation professionals on campus and in the UMN system -10% • Represent CEHSP in campus-wide Communicators Council. • Collaborate with Communications Specialists and Graphic Designers across campus and system. • Collaborate with UMPR. • Collaborate with UMD Development Office. • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: • BA/BS degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Art or related field, plus two years professional experience, or six years combined equivalent education and experience. • Excellent written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications: • Strong team skills, electronic communications and social media skills. • Evidence of producing quality promotional materials using specialized software packages (such as Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud), desktop publishing software, and email merge software • Evidence managing engaging social media presence. • Experience working within a web content management system; Direct experience with Drupal a plus. • Evidence of ability to partner with multiple stakeholders across various departments /areas. • Experience working with higher education institution(s). • Excellent organizational skills, to include multitasking and time management, and ability to prioritize tasks and manage projects.
