The Center for Survey Statistics and Methodology (CSSM) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University is seeking an Associate Scientist or Scientist I Statistician for its cooperative work with the National Resources Inventory (NRI). The NRI is a large, national survey effort requiring collaboration of staff from the Natural Resource and Conservation Service (NRCS), staff from CSSM, and Dept. of Statistics faculty and students. Personnel involved in the NRI include 22 CSSM staff members, five Statistics faculty, several graduate student RAs, and multiple NRCS collaborators (two co-located and approximately ten distributed across the United States). The NRI survey consists of an annual photo-interpretive survey, an NRI onsite grazing lands survey co-sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management, and an onsite NRI cropland survey co-sponsored by the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Each of these surveys requires multiple stages of implementation (planning/preparation, data collection, statistical processing/estimation).
The photo-interpretive survey will be the initial focus and primary responsibility of the Associate Scientist Statistician, but the individual will also have responsibilities for the other NRI surveys. The work is accomplished via focused teams composed of representatives from the larger NRI team. The closest collaborations for this position will be with CSSM statistical staff, Statistics faculty, and the NRCS National Statistician for the NRI. Most teams involve additional members from CSSM and NRCS.
The Associate Scientist spends a significant amount of time developing survey designs, statistical models, and estimation approaches for implementation in NRI surveys. The incumbent will be responsible for the statistical dimensions of NRI survey projects. The incumbent will also participate in survey database and documentation reviews. The incumbent will have opportunities to engage in applied statistical research and other forms of professional development, and will supervise supporting statistical staff.
In addition to the duties described above, the Scientist I would be responsible for more direct supervision over other statisticians in the department. This Scientist I would also have more leadership responsibilities in the projects and project management.
The successful candidate will be an effective leader in a collaborative environment that includes a diverse staff (statistical, software development, ecological and agronomic sciences).
Required Education and Experience:
Master’s degree and 5 years of related experience; OR a Ph.D. or other professional degree and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
PhD in Statistics, Bio-Statistics, Natural or Agronomic Science, or related field
Experience with statistical design and analysis in the context of biological or agricultural research, including area frames and geographic sampling methods.
Experience with the imputation of missing values.
Experience with sample surveys.
Experience with longitudinal studies.
Experience analyzing data for policy or scientific publications.
