Overview:We seek a Weed Scientist with strong interests in extension education and research in weed management in the major cropping systems in Minnesota, dominated by but not limited to corn and soybean. Minnesota ranks 4th in corn and 3rd in soybean production nationally, with 16 million acres of corn and soybean production generating $8.8 billion in revenue annually.
Appointment: Nine-month, tenure-track, at the Assistant Professor level with a 60% Extension, 40% research appointment
Responsibilities:The successful candidate will develop a nationally recognized, integrated, and collaborative extension and research program in weed management in cropping systems with a focus on the corn and soybean rotation. The successful candidate will work within University of Minnesota Extension to provide state-wide leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of innovative research-based Extension education programs on integrated weed management and will maintain working relationships with culturally diverse stakeholders.This position will provide intellectual and program leadership to multiple, targeted extension program teams. The successful candidate will advance Weed Science through an extramurally supported, nationally recognized research program on weed ecology and management.This position will address the growing challenges of herbicide resistance in key weed species, integrating evolving double and cover crop use into corn and soybean systems, and will explore the potential use of emerging technologies such as big data, robotics and artificial intelligence, seed destructors, RNAi technologies and gene editing to address newly emerging weed management issues.The ecological and environmental aspects of weed management will be considered including reduced impacts on soil and water resources, natural habitats, and biodiversity.
The department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics fully recognizes the importance of sound integrated weed management technologies and we strongly encourage a multi-disciplinary approach. Close collaboration with weed scientists, agronomists, entomologists, plant pathologists, animal scientists, engineers, economists, ecologists, and soil scientists will be required to address emerging weed management issues while maintaining economic returns from these integrated cropping systems. This position will take advantage of funding opportunities from the USDA, the state of Minnesota, commodity groups, non-profit organizations, and agricultural and technology industries.Stakeholders include regional and local Extension educators, agricultural producers, the agricultural industry, government agencies, and University faculty and USDA-ARS Scientists.

A Ph.D. by the start date of employment in Agronomy, Plant Biology, Ecology, Horticulture, Genetics, or related fields
Experience in educating stakeholders within the discipline
Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills
Experience in field research techniques, project management, and statistical analysis of field data
Commitment to the work of equity, diversity, inclusion, and a strong cultural competence
Ph.D. with an emphasis in Weed Science
Experience in designing, delivering and evaluating weed science-related extension programs
Success publishing in academic scientific journals in the discipline
Evidence of success in obtaining extramural funding
Experience working in interdisciplinary extension programs and research teams
Evidence of skills in developing and utilizing distance learning and web-based activities
