Reporting directly to the Dean of the School of Professional Studies (SPS) and serving as a member of the Executive Committee (including the Dean, Senior Vice Dean, and Senior Associate Deans), the Chief of Staff (CoS) will function as the Dean's deputy, as assigned. To this end, the CoS is responsible for advancing the Dean's priorities for the School; managing the core governance committees of the school; coordinating an effective strategy and communication structure for an integrated senior leadership team; and managing the daily operations of the Dean's Office.
The CoS will support the Dean in his capacity as both Chair of the Faculty of Professional Studies, and Chief Executive of the School. The CoS will be responsible for managing and executing the Dean's priorities, as assigned, in the following four areas: 1) Strategy & Governance; 2) External Affairs; 3) Communications & Public Affairs; and 4) Research Initiatives.
Leveraging a direct and matrixed staff, the incumbent will ensure the prioritization of activities associated with strategic agenda setting, committee and team governance, and procedural/policy oversight—specifically for the following SPS units: Dean's Council; Executive Committee; Chair's Committee; Academic Excellence Committee; Admissions Committee; Reputation, Relationships, and Development Committee; Resource Allocation Committee; Board of Overseers; Executives in Residence; and Office of the Dean. The CoS will supervise the staff in the Dean's office, as well as other third-party consultants and vendors, as retained, to meet the Dean's strategic priorities for SPS.
Support the Dean and Executive Committee in achieving target goals and priorities by serving as a strategic liaison and implementation leader; ensure a unified understanding of, and progress toward, decanal objectives
Strategize with the Dean, and other senior leaders and committee members, on institutional planning, policy development, and problem resolution; ensure implementation plans are effectively communicated and managed
Draft memos, reports, and communications on behalf of the Dean, as needed; develop presentations for targeted audiences and events
Accompany Dean to meetings and events, with both internal and external stakeholders; represent the Dean in his absence, when appropriate/necessary
Anticipate and identify issues for discussion (agenda) at key leadership meetings; identify appropriate meeting participants; work with appropriate departments/divisions to prepare and/or manage the preparation of reports, briefings, presentations, and responses on institutional and strategic issues, as necessary; coordinate communication between the Dean and other senior officers/stakeholders of the University
Coordinate strategic initiatives and communication on behalf of the Dean in the four focus areas, frequently involving faculty and/or senior officers and stakeholders of the University community; interact with senior University, industry, corporate, non-profit/NGO, government, and community officials in the representation and development of key academic activities
Manage the Communications & PR unit; provide guidance to and partner with the Senior Executive Director, Communications and Public Affairs to develop and advance a comprehensive strategy to advance the stature of the Dean (and by extension, the School of Professional Studies) as an ambassador, influencer and thought-leader; oversee drafting of presentations and a wide-range of internal and external communications
Coordinate strategic priorities for External Affairs activities and initiatives; set priorities for the Dean's presence at internally and externally focused events and meetings, and ensure that the Dean is well-prepared for such meetings; liaise and partner with the Senior Associate Dean of External Affairs to advance decanal priorities with regard to alumni relations, fundraising, business development, and the Board of Overseers
Oversee and coordinate Dean's research agenda, in collaboration with Director of Research Initiatives; serve as project manager and thought partner on research studies and related articles, books, courses, and speaking engagements; coordinate research agenda for SPS Centers/Initiatives as well as faculty-related projects
Monitor school-wide progress toward, and attainment of, assigned goals and activities
Provide operational leadership in the Office of the Dean to accomplish the organization's goals and objectives effectively
Evening and weekend work required; heavy travel, as needed

Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree is usually required or strongly desirable
Both corporate and nonprofit experience
Higher education experience, working in collaboration with senior leadership
Strong preference for management consulting experience coupled with proven project management and client service approach to solving business problems and addressing new opportunities
