The assistant dean and director of communications will develop and lead marketing and communications efforts geared toward enhancing the Law School’s visibility and reputation. Using a mix of internal and external resources, the assistant dean and director manages, coordinates, and integrates all aspects of the marketing and communications function including internal communications, executive communications, printed and digital communications, social media, marketing collateral development, photography, multimedia, design and other creative service efforts. The assistant dean and director, in partnership with the university’s Office of Public Affairs, will also oversee and guide the school’s media relations efforts. The role requires the ability to develop strong relationships with faculty, staff, alumni, students, and university colleagues; as well as demonstrate enthusiasm for and engagement in the daily life of the school, its mission, and the passions of the Law School community.�
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Marketing and Communications Strategy, Planning and Leadership
Strategy and Strategic Council -- Responsible for leading and advancing the reputation, mission, and strengths of the law school through the development and implementation of a comprehensive, data-driven, strategic communications plan.
Takes lead role working with the Law Dean (in consultation with Law Vice Deans, Associate Deans, and the Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs and her team) to develop the Law School’s overall communications strategy, messaging, and positioning in order to reach a wide range of stakeholder groups.
Serves on Law School Leadership Team and collaborates with other team members on strategic projects for the law school.
Establishes and maintains brand standards across the school, while advancing the school’s visual identity.
Directs digital marketing and communications, including the school’s websites, social media channels, e-newsletters, digital displays, fundraising and engagement materials, and all other digital communications.
Serves as primary contact for marketing and communications with the university’s Office of Alumni and Development and the university’s Office of Public Affairs. Represents law school on the university’s Marketing and Communications Committee.
Develops and oversees Marketing and Communications budget and strategic allocation of resources.
Marketing and Communications Management and Implementation
Oversees implementation of strategic messaging across print, web, and social media communications; crisis management communications; and targeted audience communications.
Supervises and works with the web group to ensure timely updates and changes to ensure consistent quality in terms of look, feel and message throughout the School’s communications.
Coordinates internal and external resources to ensure timely, cost efficient implementation.
Develops and oversees news content and strategy for law school website, including home page. Collaborates with Web Master and Web Team on strategies across website.
Oversees internal and external communications vehicles alumni enews letters and newsletters, holiday ecard, lecture series postcards, online Class Notes, etc.
Collaborates with the Dean and Dean’s Office on strategic communications for National Council. Serves lead role in managing strategic U.S. News communications messaging.
Coordinates and manages all graphic design and photography needs. Works in collaboration with photographers in the Office of Public Affairs and with a number of freelance photographers.
Oversees Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, RSS feeds and News YouTube strategies; serves as strategic consultant to other Law departments on social media platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and departmental Twitter feeds.
Manages various databases for mailings and email distribution; works with vendors to coordinate mailing distribution.
Campus Communications and Media Relations
In partnership with the news team in the Office of Public Affairs, takes the lead in promoting the Law School -� including its events and faculty scholarship - through campus communications vehicles and with external media outlets.
Manages communications for a variety of special outreach initiatives including Convocation, Commencement, Distinguished Alumni Awards, as well as other special lectures and events.
Other duties as assigned by the dean.
Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five to ten years of progressive management responsibility in the area of internal communications, strategic communications, brand strategy, issues management, public/media relations, marketing or related field.
Demonstrated ability to inspire and lead teams of individuals with varied backgrounds and skills.
Graduate degree with progressive responsibility in the area of internal communications, strategic communications, brand strategy, issues management, public relations/media relations, or marketing.
Track record of successful communications, branding and/or thought leadership strategy formulation and implementation for complex organizations with multiple stakeholders.
Higher education experience is a plus as is consulting/agency experience.
Superb writing and editorial skills.
Experience in generating and using data to drive plan development and evaluation is also ideal, as is experience in managing and implementing large scale, highly visible projects and initiatives.
Hiring, managing, developing, and evaluating staff performance is also ideal.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain excellent relations with Law School alumni, faculty, staff, and students; communications counterparts in other university schools and units; and staff in the public affairs and alumni & development offices.
Exceptional strategic thinking, critical thinking, and creative mindset.
Exceptional judgment and discretion when dealing with confidential/sensitive information.
Exceptional knowledge of Word Press CMS and email marketing software, like MailChimp.
Experience with InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
Highly desirable to have knowledge of legal education and/or the legal profession and/or experience in higher education administration.
Applicant Special Instructions:
Office Suite in Anheuser-Busch Hall. Ability to travel to on and off-campus locations. Work outside normal business hours as needed.
The hiring range for this position is $65,559 - $85,293 annually.
