The Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) has been located at Stanford University since 2000. CREDO's mission is to enhance evaluation and analysis of school reform initiatives and other education policies. Using a multidisciplinary and team-based approach, CREDO conducts studies of national significance using quantitative and qualitative analytic methods. All data preparation and quantitative analysis is conducted using the STATA statistical package. The primary value about the work is one of policy neutrality; our motto is 'we let the data speak.' Individual preferences, beliefs or ideologies are not permitted to influence the methods we employ or the conclusions that we draw.
Perform work to support research or develop public programs and policies requiring continuous exercising of independent initiative and judgment. Provide guidance to less experienced colleagues.
The Research Analyst is responsible for significant contributions to the Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) program evaluation and policy analysis work. Work performed will require a moderate degree of scientific knowledge. The Research Analyst will be supervised by senior members of the team.
Assist principal investigators with designing quasi-experimental analysis, exercising independent initiative and judgment gained from completing a variety of high level assignments, including activities such as defining variables, formulating hypotheses, and selecting subjects, sources of information, or planning and coordinating experimental protocols.
Adapt or work out the details of new, nonstandard procedures, with the supervisor providing only general guidance and suggestions.
Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
Solve problems, and make decisions which affect the direction of the research and result in independent contributions to the overall project.
Select and apply standard calculations and formulas independently to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses.
Co-author sections of research publications and regulatory reports as needed.
Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed.
Supervise staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work.
ADDITIONAL CORE DUTIES*:
Employ a variety of research techniques, including literature reviews, use of published data sources, and development of original datasets, preliminary analyses to ascertain quality of data acquired from public or private agencies, and preliminary statistical analysis of data.
* Other duties may also be assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field and two years' applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science. A degree in applied economics or quantitative policy analysis strongly preferred. Graduate degree preferred.
Applicable experience may include:
Quantitative and Qualitative research methods training and work experience in study design, sampling, original data collection (design and implementation).
Dataset development / management and analysis of school and student performance using secondary sources.
In-depth data management protocols of STATA.
Extensive experience in project management and research administration.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Comprehensive understanding of scientific theory and methods.
General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work with human study participants.
Developing supervisory skills.
Desired/Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A strong record of econometric analytic methods and related regression-based techniques.
Demonstrated expertise in the use of STATA data development, data management and data analysis.
Experience with large-scale and multi-strand datasets including preliminary data exploration, hypothesis development and testing, testing with alternative specifications and post-analysis quality review.
Certifications and Licenses:
Valid Non-commercial Class driver's license
Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
