The UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) is seeking a new Research and Development Engineer 3. The incumbent in this position shall use skills as a seasoned, experienced engineering professional in a specialized engineering field on a major training and/or research effort. Assignments typically require concentration in a field of application where subject matter knowledge relevant to research objectives and methodology is of great value in understanding and establishing engineering design criteria.
The incumbent shall be responsible for demonstrating good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions, use of engineering skills acquired through education and experience to perform design, fabrication, assembly, maintenance, testing and deployment of scientific instrumentation.
As a member of a university research and development group, the incumbent will participate in the development of oceanographic instrumentation in support of seagoing research in ocean acoustics, assist Principal Engineer in the specification and development of instruments at the system level, design and build custom analog and digital circuit boards, integrate custom designed electronics with off-the-shelf components to complete instrumentation systems that meet scientific objectives, develop and test computer and microcontroller software for system control, data acquisition and signal generation, assist in the maintenance, modification and operation of existing instrumentation systems; assist with planning, preparation, shipping, mobilization, and demobilization for at-sea experiments; participate in deployment, recovery, testing, servicing and operation of oceanographic equipment at sea; participate in the preparation of technical reports, grant proposals, scientific publications and oral presentations.
Ability to work at sea for up to three months per year and function under adverse conditions
Occasional overtime and long hours (usually during at-sea experiments)
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work.
Experience designing custom circuit boards using schematic capture and circuit board layout software (Altium preferred). Requires experience in both analog and digital electronic design techniques.
B.S. in engineering, physics or similar applied science degree and three (3) years of engineering experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to use standard electronic test equipment such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, frequency counters and spectrum analyzers.
Demonstrated experience and proficiency with programming languages including LabView, Matlab and C/C++.
Experience with operations aboard research vessels including over-the-side deployments of oceanographic equipment. Requires knowledge of shipboard deck equipment and rigging such as electric and hydraulic winches, cranes and A-frames as well as the safe use of synthetic line, cable, chain, pulleys, sheaves and bridles.
Ability to assemble, evaluate, modify and test circuit boards on the bench. Proficiency with soldering irons and other lab tools required for these operations.
Demonstrated experience expertise in developing electronic and software data acquisition and signal generation systems
Experience with digital signal processing techniques including FFTs and Fourier analysis as well as signal analysis in the time and frequency domains.
Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments. Knowledge of commonly accepted and effective electrical and mechanical design practices.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions. Ability to function independently and provide innovative approaches to problem solving and process development.
