Provides leadership and strategic direction to a diverse team of staff overseeing the development, implementation and management of electronic systems in OVPR which support research administration, compliance and reporting. Serves as a subject matter expert and provide managerial leadership, operational support for the implementation, ongoing development and delivery of research administration systems administered by OVPR and other groups within the University. S/he collaborates with the AVP to ensure that OVPR has electronic systems and processes in place to ensure the provision of excellent service to the faculty and administrators through effective infrastructure that facilitates the pursuit of research opportunities, administration of research projects, and reporting. Assoc. Director will identify and anticipate user needs and respond promptly providing assistance to our customer base throughout the system. This position will be the liaison between OVPR, CIS, other academic and administrative departments and vendors.
Major Responsibilities & Expected End-Results and % Time.
1. Leadership and Supervision: 20% time Provides leadership and supervision to a diverse team of staff managing the electronic systems for research administration and compliance, as well as the reporting function of these areas to the University. The Assoc Director is expected to develop a strong, productive, service-oriented team by modeling and promoting a culture of collaboration and partnership with faculty, students, research administrators and other service groups within the institution. Strong collaboration between the incumbent, other OVP department directors and their staff, central administration and academic departments will be critical to success. Displaying good judgment is essential, including the ability to be forward thinking.The end result will be the creation of a supportive, collaborative environment that reduces the administrative burden on faculty and staff and facilitates the facultyâ™s ability to focus on science.
2. Operations and Management: 70% The Assoc Director will identify and anticipate user needs, balance technical innovation and usability to improve customer productivity and respond promptly by providing respectful assistance to our customer base throughout the system. Works closely with CIS as CIS builds and operates the production systems that will support OSPâ™s vision for research administration, integrity, compliance, and reporting. The Assoc Director will lead the processes to develop design specifications for enhancements, analyze and implement new functionality and develop test plans for releases and bug fixes.
40% Direct the implementation and adoption of all modules of InfoEd within OVPR and the research community. The Director will serve as a subject matter expert and leader in the delivery of research administration systems. In collaboration with other Directors, faculty and research administrators, develops efficient workflows and business processes to support research management and compliance business activities.
30% Direct the development and implementation of systems and tools to meet the reporting requirements of all customers. Ensures the provision of timely and accurate reports that enhance the ability of the Vice President for Research and other members of senior management, faculty and staff to make informed decisions for current operations and long range planning. Analyzes requests for information and develops procedures to improve financial reporting; Ensure the accuracy and integrity of all data in the systems and data warehouse.
3. Policy, Procedure and Training Development:10% time.The Director will contribute substantially to the shaping and revision of all applicable departmental and University policies related to the electronic support for research administration.S/he will: lead the development of written policies, guidance and procedures for OVPR and departmental research administrators related to use of the systems;ensure the team has current, expert knowledge of the systems; effectively communicate knowledge, policy/process changes, instructions and other pertinent information to faculty and departmental research administrators.Successful completion of these activities will ensure the staff are subject matter experts and they provide constructive suggestions to customers about how to resolve issues and keep the processes moving.All information will be well communicated to the research community and readily available and easily accessible on the OSP website.
Bachelorâ™s degree required, advanced degree preferred, and 7 -10 years of experience in staff, research and project management and enterprise IS systems.
Familiarity with all areas of grant management
Knowledge of computer applications, advanced database and spreadsheet skills
Experience with implementation of enterprise financial systems
Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and process large amounts of information
Demonstrated ability to work well with faculty, department managers and administrators, deans, external agency officials and colleagues with the OVPR. Capacity for high caliber delivery of customer service.
