Job Requisition Number: 26813. The Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, was established to integrate neuroscience faculty across the University. The broad goal is to use the power of diverse research approaches to address central questions in neuroscience.
The faculty of the Institute include over 65 researchers with state-of-the-art laboratories from the Departments of Molecular and Cell Biology, Psychology, Physics, and Integrative Biology in the College of Letters and Sciences; the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Biomolecular Engineering and Chemistry in the College of Chemistry, the Department of Environmental Science Policy and Management in the College of Natural Resources; the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute; the School of Public Health; Departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and Bioengineering in the College of Engineering; the School of Optometry's Program in Vision Sciences; and the Haas School of Business.
The Institute also administers the Graduate Program in Neuroscience. Students admitted to the program may work with any of the Neuroscience PhD Program Faculty and are fully supported for the duration of their graduate work.
This job involves conducting and/or supporting laboratory research, which may include routine or non-routine laboratory operations, data interpretation, development and performance of technical protocols and procedures, design of experiments, literature studies, preparation of scientific papers, help with grant and IRB protocol writing. It also involves coordinating people involved in lab research (post-doc, graduate students and undergraduate research assistants), organizing lab meetings and invited speakers’ visits, and helping with other administrative or social needs of the lab.
Under the direction of the supervisor and/or Postdoc(s) the Staff Research Associate (SRA) will provide research assistance. Incumbent will assist with overseeing research experiments from start to finish including (but not limited to) recruitments, scheduling subjects, preparing and running the experiments, as well as accurately collecting and recording the data. Gather experimental data by running behavioral and EEG experiments. Assist with data analyses. Maintain and organize the collected data (digital and paper) according to the laboratory standards.
Insure proper operation and maintenance of the laboratory such as purchase, receive, store, organize, and distribute supplies for laboratory research projects, as well as software maintenance (i.e. installation, and upgrades); maintain inventory records.
Ensure proper operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment; perform simple equipment repair and maintenance. Laboratory maintenance also includes clean-ups and set-ups. Ensures that specimen collections and equipment are maintained properly.
Research and administrative duties will include but is not limited to organizing lab meetings and other occasional lab social events. Provide assistance with training undergraduate research assistants on laboratory tasks and techniques such as (but is not limited to) EEG and data analyses. Assist with coordinating undergraduate research assistants’ lab tasks. Ensures regulatory compliance relative to safety in small to medium or single facility; provides for staff training in equipment use and safety protocols. Collaboratively write and/or edit IRB protocols, grants, and other scientific reports as needed. May contribute towards articles for publication in scientific journals or for presentations at conferences or symposiums. Consults with academic supervisors or professional researchers on the nature and objectives of the research project or instructional design goals.
Other duties as assigned.•Bachelors degree in related area (Cognitive science, Cognitive neuroscience, Neuroscience, Psychology) and/or equivalent experience. •Focus of knowledge and skills dependent on area of running behavioral and EEG experiments, organizing human data, writing experimental code, data analysis. •Solid interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with a multi-diverse community. •Knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques. •Solid written and communication skills.
