The Head of Special Collections and Archives works collaboratively with a team of faculty and staff to oversee all aspects of the special collections and archives. Manages, coordinates, and oversees the department's public service and outreach programs, collection development, technical processing, digital stewardship, and collection access. As a member of the library leadership team, responsible for communicating a vision, setting and communicating priorities, and developing strategies to move the library forward.
Responsibilities 1.Provide leadership and oversight for Special Collections and Archives. Develop programs and services to curate and promote special collections and archives by providing access to rare books, manuscripts and archival resources, art, and artifacts. 2.Provides day-to-day direction, supervision, and guidance of employees (faculty and staff) assigned to Special Collections and Archives in their operations, policies, and procedures. Continually assesses and evaluates programs, services, policies, and processes of the department. 3.Works collaboratively with staff and members of the Wigton Heritage Center Advisory Council to develop and implement exhibits, publications, lectures, web-based media, and other forms of communication. 4.Fosters cross-departmental collaboration and relations with campus and community stakeholders to extend the reach of UNMC's collections. 5.Actively involved in donor cultivation and fundraising with the Director and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of the McGoogan Library. 6.Participates in professional activities and professional development, including participation in the University of Nebraska Consortium of Libraries (UNCL)
ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library or Information Science, or a graduate degree in archival studies, history, or a related field with library or archives experience
Seven years professional experience in an academic library or museum special collections department or archival repository
Five years of relevant, progressively responsible supervisory and management or other relevant supervisory experience
Demonstrated knowledge of current principles, best practices and standards of book and archival collections in an academic library environment
Excellent interpersonal skills; evidence of strong written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated experience managing an exhibits program
Successful record of experience in employee development, change management and team building, including a demonstrated commitment to building and supporting a diverse and inclusive library faculty and staff
Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, project planning and management, implementing and assessing program services
Knowledge of intellectual property and copyright issues related to special collections and archives
Experience with donor relations, fundraising, and grant writing
Experience with digital records management and preservation
