This is an executive position in the Department of Law that is responsible for the daily oversight and management of the professional legal staff in the department. The position requires significant management and leadership experience with an ability to handle multiple urgent matters contemporaneously. The employee serving in this position must possess an ability to perform a wide variety of difficult, complex and sensitive legal matters. Additional expectations include an ability to manage both the quantity and quality of departmental work output and implement strategies to help ensure the goals and outcomes of the Department of Law are being met. Among other duties, the position is responsible for participation with research of comparative programs, development of problem solving solutions, business process improvements, and investigations. Key scope of services will often involve providing legal opinions and counsel as well as, directly managing or litigating cases when necessary. Special assignments and major projects may be given by the City Attorney or at the request of other City officials. This position operates under the direction and authority of the City Attorney and serves to fulfill the City Charter responsibilities of the City Attorney in their absence.
Juris Doctorate and valid license to practice law in Michigan (or the ability to waive in)
At least six (6) years of law experience;
Substantial supervisory and project management experience, along with the ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives.
