The Department of Pathology at University of California, San Francisco is seeking for an Associate Specialist. The duties of the successful candidate will be as follows:
Perform complex (lab and/or field) experiments for a major portion of the research project. Maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes. The PI or Supervisor assigns the incumbent an outline of experiments to advance the PI’s research program. The incumbent is responsible for determining the best approach to the assigned work. The incumbent must recognize irregularities in experimental results, grounded in both theoretical knowledge and experience, and take steps to correct them. Utilize techniques completing next generation sequencing of large sample cohorts is one of the experiments that the incumbent will be responsible for as well as analyzing and determining the best approach. Utilizing techniques associated with digital image processing and analysis are also key. Analyze results and interpret data. Make changes as necessary and report to faculty on developments.
Interpret and analyze results, often where few guidelines exist. Based on prior results, contribute to development of new research protocols and procedures or adaptation of existing protocols. Independently develop new approaches to analyzing and performing next generation sequencing. Test new analysis and make changes as necessary. Actively contribute to the research of Ohgami Lab by analyzing results of next generation sequencing (NGS). Make changes to next generation sequencing procedures based on results and research found.
Make recommendations on plan design and/or research direction to principal investigator. For instance, advise on new digital imaging and next generation sequencing approaches.
Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings. Direct biosafety and IRB and SCRO protocols and oversees general lab safety.
Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
Oversee supply and equipment budget under supervision of principal investigator or business manager.
Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; present findings for lab work group. Survey literature on new scientific protocols and new methodologies. Present findings to PI that will inform direction of future research.
Contribute substantively to papers for publication, especially in the results section. Will contribute to publication of findings and present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
Supervise (either formally or informally) staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work. Serve as technical resource for other research staff.
Perform general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. May assist with purchasing laboratory equipment.
Required Qualifications: Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or have at least five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.
