The Communications Department is currently searching for a Sr. Graphic Designer or Graphic Designer to join their team. This is a full-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.
The Creative Studio at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking an individual with extensive experience in digital and print design. We're looking for someone who can take the lead with written or spoken ideas and convert them seamlessly into images, layouts, and other designs. The successful candidate should have an intimate understanding of how to visually communicate science, and how marketing campaigns work, especially in the nonprofit realm, to support our clients. We work in a fast-paced environment, so the ideal candidate will be able to hit the ground running as soon as we bring on new projects. Applicants who have experience with scientific or nonprofit institutions will be given prime consideration.
The ideal candidate will be able to collaborate energetically and lead creative discussions on projects with a science writer/editor, other members of the team, or directly with clients from across all scientific disciplines at the Institution; develop storyboards and utilize a versatile skillset to design, create, and package a wide array of multimedia to communicate complex scientific efforts; and create end products by use of all/some of the following platforms: illustration, animated graphics, graphic design, image editing, and video. Take on and own complete projects from initial estimate to budget to completion.
Carries out a wide range of complex duties utilizing a versatile skill set to design, create, and package a wide array of multimedia to communicate complex scientific concepts
Digital design, including information architecture, wireframing, user experience design for both web and interactives, social media graphics and banners, static and rich banner ads, and email campaigns
Multimedia design: Creates effective graphics for presentations, displays, and exhibits
Print design: Prepares sketches and layouts to illustrate vision for design; selects colors, photography, typography, and other visual elements for the design
With the Creative Director, prepares estimates and quotes for both large and small projects for public outreach, marketing, and communications.
Prepares specifications and purchase orders for outside services such as printers, solicits bids for services, and follows jobs through to delivery
Contributes to other projects within Communications as required
Required to act independently and lead in decision making with little to no direction
Mentor and train other members of the Creative team
Fluency in the software InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, AfterEffects, and Keynote/PowerPoint.
Direct client interaction experience with the ability to build relationships, understand client vision/direction and present designs and concepts.
Highly conceptual thinking in both visual and interaction design as well as a solid understanding of designing intuitive site functionality, interaction, user interfaces, and navigation
A person who will help foster great creative culture and talent
Strong desire to define the look and feel of what is next in visual and interaction design and an interest in the latest design trends, technology and social media.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
The Sr. Graphic Designer must have both a demonstrated artistic/creative ability and a superior knowledge of graphic design and information visualization principles with continuing knowledge of innovations and trends within those fields.
Additionally, the candidate must have:
Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Marketing or related discipline with 7+ years in professional design, preferably with a marketing or creative agency.
Should be tech savvy, with extensive experience with Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, specifically with mockups, web and email design, and multimedia presentations.
Ability to absorb and apply constructive criticism from peers and clients
Excellent communication skills
An online portfolio that demonstrates a distinctive knack for visual storytelling, utilizing the contemporary skillset necessary to produce excellent multimedia for a variety of uses
Proven ability to manage multiple projects with tight and shifting deadlines.
Physical duties for this position include visual abilities to include, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions. Other physical tasks include mostly sedentary, working around others, alone and with others. Physical duties are subject to change.
