The Assistant Director for Online Programs will provide overall leadership for the planning, development, implementation, staffing, quality assurance, and student/faculty services supporting online instruction for the University. The individual in this role will play a leadership role on campus, helping to enhance and grow online programs across the University of Pittsburgh.
The Assistant Director's role is focused on ensuring the quality of online programs, advancing the Pitt Online brand, and leading campus efforts in online learning. The Assistant Director manages a team of six employees which serves as a service unit to all schools within the university community. The incumbent oversees the development and delivery of online programs to Pitt Online students, as well as the development and implementation of MOOCs and Continuing Education courses. The incumbent also acts as a liaison with campus directors of school-based online programs, offered both within and outside of Pitt Online. The Assistant Director collaborates with external vendors on contract services for various schools. The position involves representing the University internally and externally in distance education matters, providing leadership in best practices in online education, and ensuring Pitt's online course delivery methodology sets a high standard in the academic community. This is a professional staff position within the University Center for Teaching and Learning.
A successful track record of innovation and demonstrated experience in supporting online learning in higher education is required, along with outstanding technical, project management and communication skills. Experience working with commercial partners is a plus. The employee must also have strong personnel management experience, and experience managing program budgets. A Master's degree in the field of Educational Technology, Information Science, or Instructional Design is required, in addition to a minimum of ten years' experience in academic technology, distance learning, and/or online initiatives.
Must possess strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to exercise mature judgment. Knowledge of adult learning principles and experience in teaching or training, preferably at the college/university level, is a plus as is experience working as a consultant with faculty in a higher education environment. The employee must have supervisory and project management experience.
