The Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases (IID) focuses on the biological, immunological, epidemiological and ecological aspects of viral, bacterial and protozoan diseases of animals and humans, including the vectors that transmit infectious agents. Research in the department's 14 laboratories is primarily focused on diseases of developing countries.
The Senior Research and Facility Manager will coordinate the daily operations of the USDA-approved insectaries and infection rooms at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. This is the only such Facility in the northeast. Consequently, the demands on this facility are very high. The successful candidate will oversee insectary and infection workspaces, protocols, facility users and staff in the work of the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases to study mosquito biology and vector-parasite interactions. The manager will facilitate insect production and the in vitro culture of Plasmodium parasites and other infectious pathogens for facility users and staff to reliably rear and infect several species of mosquitoes. Principal facility users are members of the Department's vector biology and parasitology laboratories. In addition, the manager will also coordinate with new users and internal/external collaborators in their use requirements of the Insectary and Infection facility and training certification.
The Senior Research and Facility Manager is responsible for the core operational management of the insectaries and infection rooms at the Harvard Chan School. The manager will perform a wide range of activities that vary in scope - the management of resources in a complex environment, overall project management as well as general research support. They will be responsible for the below duties including but not limited to those listed here. In addition, the manager must have strong organizational, communication and teaching skills. The successful candidate will:
Manage internal and external collaborations and their use of the Facility
Keep training records of all Facility users
Lead monthly departmental meetings of i) Insectary users and ii) Infection users
Assist in hiring Insectary and Infection Facility staff and oversee aspects of their training by writing job descriptions, reviewing candidate CVs, coordinating in-person interviews, collaboratively making hiring decisions
Supervise 2-3 insectary employees, coordinate duties, workload and scheduling, prioritize projects, evaluate and compete annual performance reviews
Develop and maintain SOPs with Facility users and staff and Chan School Biosafety Officers
Upkeep MTAs and arrange shipments of Facility products to local and global collaborators
Order Facility commodities and track expenditure associated with Insectary and Infection platforms
Contribute to the design and execution of Facility expansion
Assist in the longer-term transitioning of the Facility into a service center, work with the Director of Research Operations to establish organizational protocols for this model, work with the finance team to establish service center charge back processes
Coordinate with Chan School Operations to maintain workspaces and equipment in the Insectary and Infection Facility
Independent facility oversight, resource management and inventory control
Performs other duties as assigned

Bachelor's Degree required
5+ years of related experience is required
Masters Degree in a related field is strongly preferred
Previous supervisory experience is preferred
3+ years' experience in a related biological research discipline, especially entomology, parasitology, or infectious diseases preferred
Experience working with BSL-2 level infectious diseases (or above), especially Plasmodium parasites, cell/tissue culture preferred
Experience with current Arthropod Containment Guidelines for Insectaries, and required regulatory approval processes (CDC/USDA), including import/export permitting and transport preferred
Experience working with mice, Plasmodium berghei, and IACUC regulations preferred
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills preferred
Excellent organizational and record keeping skills preferred
