The Department of Genome Sciences (GS) is part of the University of Washington School of Medicine and is comprised of 26 labs addressing leading edge questions in biology and medicine by developing and applying genetic, genomic and computational approaches taking advantage of genomic information now available for a host of species. GS is making major contributions in the application of genome science to understand the fundamentals of biology and to improve human health and wellbeing. Genome Sciences is a collaborative department supported by very different academic disciplines. We work with a multitude of Program Investigators (PIs) in departments both on the UW campus as well as worldwide. The department has gone through significant expansion since its beginning in 2001 with annual grant awards of $67M in FY17. The department has 47 training, teaching, and research faculty.
The new Brotman Baty Institute for Precision Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a MUTATIONAL SCANNING PROJECT MANAGER at the intersection of cutting edge technology development and medicine. The institute bridges the University of Washington, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital. The Advanced Technology Lab is a new entity within this new institute, and will be administratively located within the Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington. The mission of the Advanced Technology Lab will be to make cutting-edge ‘-omics’ technologies, including many developed by labs at the member institutions, broadly available to the Institute’s research community. At the outset, these technologies will include scalable assays for single cell molecular profiling, targeted DNA sequencing, and functional profiling of genetic variants.
Position purpose: We seek an individual with a mix of strong molecular and cellular biology skills along with the ability to organize and oversee collaborations and business operations as a Project Manager for the Advanced Technology Lab at the new Brotman Baty Institute. The Project Manager and their team will be responsible for: 1) Developing and producing reagents for mutational scanning that will be available to the community for a fee, including barcoded variant libraries and saturation genome editing reagents. 2) Consulting with collaborating labs in the community on best-practices for designing mutational scanning experiments. 3) Performing mutational scanning experiments and data analysis. 4) Overseeing targeted DNA sequencing. 5) Overseeing single cell molecular profiling experiments.
The Advanced Technology Lab will continue to optimize and offer services based on technologies developed by institute labs in Genome Sciences and elsewhere. The candidate will also work with the other more clinically focused platforms at the Brotman Baty Institute to aid in translating the methods from the Advanced Technology lab into the clinic. As an early employee of the Advanced Technology Lab, the candidate will have the ability to shape the goals and culture of the new facility.

Business Operations (75%):
Optimize and implement molecular assays for collaborators (30%), methods include:
Perform mutational scanning experiments at scale
Building reagents for multiplexed functional assays at scale
Targeted sequencing assays at scale
Manage the budget for the facility, including establishing internal and external pricing (20%)
Manage billing of services, including communication with collaborators on billing and pricing information (10%)
Oversee collaborations with partner institutions from sample intake through data analysis and billing (10%)
Implement and operate a LIMS system for reagent and sample tracking (5%)
Train and manage at least one full time employee (research scientist/engineer I or II) with the likelihood of more as the lab grows.
M.S degree in molecular biology, cellular biology, genetics or related discipline with significant experience in high-throughput methods.
3+ years of post-doctoral or professional experience in functional genomics.
Candidate should have outstanding academic and professional track record.
Significant managerial and mentoring experience.
Candidate should be an innovative and analytical thinker with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills. Must be highly disciplined and organized.
Successful candidate will be highly self-motivated and enthusiastic about taking a hands-on approach to collaborative scientific discovery efforts.
Ph.D. degree in molecular biology, cellular biology, genetics or related discipline with significant experience in high-throughput functional genomic research
