The Division of Strategic Partnership and Applied Research’s Office of IT Services is accepting applications for a Systems Administrator. This position is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure. Participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. Ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values.
The Systems Administrator will assist project teams with technical issues in the Initiation and Planning phases of our standard Project Management Methodology. These activities include the definition of needs, benefits, and technical strategy; research & development within the project life-cycle; technical analysis and design; and support of operations staff in executing, testing and rolling-out the solutions. Participation on projects is focused on smoothing the transition of projects from development staff to production staff by performing operations activities within the project life-cycle.
This individual is accountable for the following systems: provisioning, operations and support, maintenance and research and development to ensure continual innovation. Provide day-to-day administration and future enhancements for Microsoft Windows server infrastructure at the enterprise level, provide second-tier support for all Microsoft Windows-related issues, and provide proactive and reactive management, migrations of existing systems as well as the implementation of new systems for IT Services clients.
Strategy & Planning
Administering solutions for various project and operational needs.
Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
Install and configure systems such as supports GIS infrastructure applications.
Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
Contribute to and maintain system standards.
Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
Acquisition & Deployment
Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
Create, change, and delete user accounts per request.
Provide Tier II/other support per request from various constituencies.
Investigate and troubleshoot issues.
Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.
Research quotes from vendors and work with Procurement to make purchases of new hardware, software, and maintenance licenses.
Operational Management Systems
Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary.
Upgrade and configure system software that supports GIS infrastructure applications or Asset Management applications per project or operational needs.
Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures.
Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
Provide Tier II desktop support for Divisional Help Desk by assisting student interns and escalating tickets to engineers as needed.
High School Diploma with 3 years total IT experience with 1 year System Administrator experience.
Previous experience as a Microsoft Windows System Administrator - 1 year of experience.
The ability to obtain a Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate certificate within 12 months of employment.
Strong in-depth working knowledge and migration experience with Microsoft Active Directory.
In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP networking concepts.
Working knowledge and experience with Dell Servers, Enclosures, Stand-Alone Servers, including HBA and SAN technology.
Highly adept at problem solving using experience and solid analytical problem solving skills.
High sense of urgency and accountability.
Excellent interpersonal skills, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Evidence of customer focus and proven ability to integrate with a team.
A Criminal Background Investigation is required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.
Salary and Benefits
Competitive salary and an annually renewable contract with subsidized benefits. Contractual employees scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage. The position is contingent on funds being available at time of hire.
