The National Association of Manufacturers is seeking a savvy and experienced director of external affairs to lead efforts to craft and manage comprehensive advocacy initiatives to advance manufacturing priorities on significant state and local issues. The ideal candidate for this position will be someone with an eye for strategy and detail who can also anticipate, plan for and effectively advance multiple projects through an ever-changing environment. This person has a keen sense for meeting both association objectives and those of both internal and external stakeholders.
This candidate will work collaboratively across the NAM to plan the development of campaigns, manage budgets, oversee vendors and lead efforts to coordinate campaign efforts and clearly capture and share the value to members as a result of campaign activities. This position will also be responsible for engaging coalitions, developing surrogates and surfacing advocacy insights and trends for NAM members and partners. This position will also have a significant responsibility for redeveloping the NAM’s state affairs program, which is responsible for identifying emerging state and local issues of broader national import to the industry, engaging members with updates on those issues and developing campaigns to address those emerging issues in conjunction with the NAM’s state partner network.
Day to day responsibilities
Drives advocacy and public affairs initiatives on key issue campaigns at the direction of the head of the Advocacy Department
Develop, recommend and administer operating budgets for advocacy campaigns and manage vendors to execute campaigns in conjunction with appropriate NAM staff
Identify the most appropriate and compelling deliverables to meet campaign objectives, measure campaign performance against KPIs and clearly distill and communicate campaigns’ performance to internal and external stakeholders
Develops and maintains the association relationships with key third-party persons and organizations, ranging from external coalitions to development and activation of non-traditional surrogates, allies and partners, as well as state-based organizations
Identifying and surfacing emerging state and local issues with broader advocacy implications across the manufacturing industry, and engaging stakeholders to build campaigns to address those emerging issues
Lead efforts to organize, promote and execute advocacy programming for senior advocacy professionals at NAM member companies and organizations
Work to leverage member companies and partner associations’ advocacy capabilities (e.g., employee engagement programs, supplier and customer networks, etc.)
Develop strategy to better identify and engage small and localized manufacturers who are willing to take action to support NAM priority issues
Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university, preferably with a political science or public policy emphasis is preferred;
6 to 10 years of association experience, corporate government affairs, political campaign or Capitol Hill experience;
Established track record of administering issue advocacy campaigns, including strategic planning and budget management
Strong writing, computer and organizational/time management skills;
Track record of identifying and developing comprehensive responses to emerging state and local issues
Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work as a team, build relations and collaborate effectively with colleagues
Event planning/management experience, including strategic planning, content development and logistics;
Proven ability to work effectively in a fast paced, quality and goal driven work environment.
