Macalester College seeks a seasoned donor relations professional to oversee its donor relations program and ensure that alumni, parents, and friends have meaningful and rewarding relationships with the institution. This position offers an opportunity for a creative and collaborative person to lead a sophisticated donor relations program that incorporates best practices and new ideas in its stewardship efforts.
The ideal candidate will be a talented team leader proven at motivating, training and managing a staff; possess superior communications skills with the ability to construct effective messaging for a variety of audiences; and have the ability to analyze information and think strategically, critically, and creatively.
Manage all components of –a comprehensive donor relations program, including gift acknowledgements, endowed fund agreements, stewardship reports for endowed and spendable funds, donor recognition projects, permanent recognition on campus, and other engagement opportunities and outreach efforts.
Work closely with planned, major and principal gift teams to create meaningful stewardship plans for donors to Macalester; including direct management of a small portfolio of donors.
Collaborate with members of the greater Advancement team, to support special events, publications, and stewardship activities for capital and building projects.
Manage and lead a two-person donor relations team and their wide-range of front line, concurrent, and high profile responsibilities. Provide strategic direction and practical guidance to staff members by setting a clear direction for the department and aspirational expectations for individual high-performance and future success.
Ensure that best practices (well-established and emerging) in donor relations are followed while also fostering a working environment that values creativity, rewards new ideas and risk-taking, and considers new and innovative approaches to engage the broad array of donors who support Macalester’s mission.
Manage the donor relations budgets including those for programs, special events and do publications, including forecasting funds needed for staffing, materials, and supplies .
Maintain and p update the policies and procedures for all donor relations processes activities.
Demonstrate a strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity. Actively engage in learning and practicing principles of social justice and inclusion to increase individual capacity to support institutional changes that create and sustain a more welcoming and inclusive environment across the Macalester Community.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Minimum of 4 years of experience leading a stewardship or donor relations program; higher education and campaign experience highly preferred.
Candidates will also need to demonstrate an ability and willingness to support, respect and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view in order to foster an inclusive work environment.
Experience conducting and facilitating face-to-face meetings with donors.
Demonstrated skill at building interpersonal relationships with alumni, donors, colleagues, faculty and other constituents.
Knowledgeable about current donor relations trends and best practices; including ways to utilize technology, digital communications and social media in stewardship.
Knowledgeable about endowed fund management, fundraising, and gift accounting procedures.
Experience with special event budget management and administration, as well as vendor contract negotiation.
In-depth knowledge and experience with relational fundraising software and the tools and technologies that support good stewardship.
Strong oral and written communication skills as well as organized and detail-oriented.
A creative, energetic and positive leader who works successfully and collegially as a team member.
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, multi-task and work under pressure in a constantly changing environment.
