The Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS) was created in July 2015 and is currently in the process of transforming into an Institute that serves the entire campus while continuing to build from its strong national and international reputation. MIDAS serves as the focal point for the multidisciplinary research and collaboration for Data Science at the University of Michigan. This domain covers a wide spectrum of scientific and technical sub-disciplines (development of concepts, methods, and technologies) for data collection, management, analysis, and interpretation, as well as their innovative use to address important problems in science, engineering, medicine and health, social and political science, business, humanities, and other areas.
Data Science is now widely accepted as the fourth mode of scientific discovery, on par with theory, physical experimentation, and computational analysis. Data Science Methods based on Big Data analytics, Machine Learning (ML), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are transforming all areas of research, education, and practice. It is also transforming society and the career and employment landscapes world-wide.
Management of education programs:
Support students in the Data Science Graduate Certificate Program;
Coordinate activities for the Data Science Fellows program;
Build community among students and fellows in the above programs and in various Data Science degree programs on campus;
Lead the staff effort to organize the data science high school summer camp, work closely with the summer camp faculty and teaching assistants from Planning to admissions to providing student supervision during camp;
Work with faculty and students to match industry and community data science projects to classes;
Support MIDAS’ industry data science training program by providing project management for course design;
Work with MIDAS Associate Director for Education and Training to develop new, support existing, and extend collaborative education activities;
Provide logistics support to student data science teams, help with research project intake and the coordination of team activities;
Be the point person at MIDAS to build a data science students community through social events, newsletters and other approaches.
Plan and implement logistics for events related to the education programs;
Create and maintain database of data science education activities;
Coordinate data aggregation, reporting, and tracking;
Develop new content for MIDAS research, education, partnerships, and service activities, grants, reports, and sissemination
Collect data and assist in evaluation of the education programs and activities in order to assess program effectiveness.
Ability to set priorities, exercise initiative, meet deadlines and work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team;
>2 years of experience in education program administration and management;
Excellent project management skills;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
Strong interpersonal skills, especially when working with faculty and students;
Skills of problem solving and decision making;
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
Some analytical skills;
Demonstrated computer literacy in common Microsoft office software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Google (Gmail, Calendar, and Drive) and the ability to learn specialized software.
Working knowledge of academic research or research support.
