Departmental Overview The Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) promotes better understanding of the conditions, policies, and institutions that affect the well-being of workers and their families and communities. We inform public debate with hard evidence about inequality, the economy, and the nature of work. If you're a strong writer with social media and graphics skills, read on. We're seeking a skilled, enthusiastic team member to help us promote our institute and findings by nationally-known researchers on social and economic justice issues.
General communications support: Provides communications assistance as necessary, including helping manage press inquiries and track report releases, writing and assembling content for newsletters, press releases and other reports, and providing copy-editing for publications. Assists Communications Director with media outreach as needed.
Social media: Manages social media outlets, including Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook under supervision of Communications Director. Develops memes and other promotional visuals.
Graphic design and layout: Manages all graphic assets, including photo library, obtaining photo and/or video documentation of events as needed, identifying appropriate photos for publications and other communications materials, and managing processes for obtaining original photos. Manages layout and design of a variety of publications, including Mailchimp newsletters, policy briefs in Adobe Indesign, annual reports, etc.
Website: Provides quality control and makes content updates for the IRLE website.
Events: Maintains strategic oversight of event programming: publicity strategies, making flyers, identifying co-sponsors, advertising to targeted faculty, developing guest lists, drafting website content and invitations, and directing IRLE staff providing logistical support.
Manages communications for occasional conferences (e.g. making programs, publicizing, directing logistics, identifying co-sponsors, targeted outreach, editing event copy, creating post-conference materials). Identifies opportunities for IRLE to participate in campus events.
Manages IRLE's campus outreach, including developing and maintaining relationships with departments and other campus units, identifying opportunities for campus engagement, and maintaining campus contact information in Salesforce.
Assists in other facets of internal and external communications as necessary, and pursues professional development opportunities.
Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with program directors and researchers to ensure delivery of the desired message to key audiences.
Experience conducting event outreach.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications, including active listening and political acumen skills.
Experience with social media campaigns and ability to build engagement across multiple platforms.
Experience with Google suite of applications and tools, Salesforce, Mailchimp, and the Adobe design suite. High comfort level with learning new technology and ability to identify opportunities to leverage new communications technologies.
Advanced writing/editorial experience; outstanding oral communication and interpersonal skills;
Experience collaborating with internal and external resources to develop and execute communication.
Ability to take initiative, manage projects, multi-task, and work cross-functionally, as well as ask for clarity when needed.
Demonstrated strong work ethic/organizational skills; and advanced analytical, decision-making and critical thinking skills.
Minimum of three years post-degree work experience preferred
Experience working on student programming and outreach in a higher education environment.
Knowledge of UC Berkeley.
Knowledge of public policy issues relating to labor and employment
