The Art and Design Department at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, is one of 16 academic departments in the College of Liberal Arts and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Its primary purpose is to prepare students in the major for careers in art and design and related fields. The department offers a BFA in three concentrations: graphic design, photography and video, and studio art, and supports three minors (art history, photography and video, studio art), including a joint minor with the Computer Science Department in Computing for Interactive Arts. The Art and Design program consists of approximately 240 majors, 100 minors, and also offers courses that fulfill GE requirements to the general university population. There are 11 full-time tenure-line faculty, 11-14 part-time lecturers per term, and 7 full-time staff positions. All of these personnel use the Art and Design studios and educational workspaces as active components of their teaching programs. The hands-on instructional opportunities supported by these facilities are essential to the college's academic mission.
Under the general direction of the Department Chair and in consultation with the Photography/Video faculty lead, the Photography/Video Technician is responsible for the independent execution of a variety of complex work tasks, including providing a full range of support services for both the lower- and upper-division Photography/Video Option classes. The Photography/Video Technician provides instructional support to students ranging from properly using photographic and video equipment; to checking out, managing, and maintaining a wide variety of photo and video equipment; to providing instruction on computer programs and peripherals. This position will also coordinate activity and access, and provide specialized technical and instructional support for classes and individual student projects, and will make recommendations to the faculty regarding equipment and supply purchase and replacement.
This position oversees approximately 1500 combined square feet of classroom, shooting studio, digital printing lab, computers and darkrooms in the Photography/Video Lab. The Photography/Video Lab consists of photography/video studios, video editing suites, a digital printing and computer lab, and an advanced facility with wet darkrooms. The Photography/Video Technician regularly recruits, hires and manages student assistants. The Photography/Video Technician also accommodates the entire Department with photo/video services pertaining to both academics and extracurricular, department-related activities.

Education and Experience:
Three years of experience providing instructional support services in a related discipline or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline. Two years of college with 16 semester units in courses in the related specialty area discipline may be substituted for one year of required experience OR four years of college with 16 semester units in courses in the related specialty area discipline may be substituted for two years of required experience.
Licenses, Certificates, Credentials:
Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Extensive knowledge of current industry standards, use, terminology and full range of production techniques as it pertains to studio photography, video and darkroom management, including photographic and video equipment and shooting technique, lighting, sound recording, digital image and video editing, and advances in related technology.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications and peripherals including Adobe Photoshop CS, Lightroom, Capture One, Adobe Premiere, color management software; Epson and Canon printers, scanners, and digital projectors as well as standard word-processing, spreadsheet, database, and calendaring and email programs on both Mac and PC for on-line and work station environments.
Ability to systemically troubleshoot issues related to the use of complex photographic and video equipment; ability to isolate and resolve assessed problems or suggest alternatives.
Skilled in the maintenance, repair, and operation of Photographic and Video equipment including construction and fabrication and some precision work with a variety of unique materials.
Knowledge of chemical safety, disposal and handling of hazardous waste materials.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to develop, interpret, communicate, and apply policies and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to maintain records, budgets and financial records.
Ability to recognize and direct students with academic issues, wellness issues, and other conflicts to the appropriate faculty or campus agencies.
Bachelor's degree or higher in Photography/Video or related field.
Prior experience in a teaching photography/video environment.
Knowledge of virtual reality equipment and software including HTC Vive.
Experience in hiring, training, evaluating and supervising.
Phase One Certified Professional (PCOP)
Experience with digital media file management and use of servers.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

Must be able to work in an environment that involves excessive bending, reaching, lifting up to 25lbs. without assistance, walking, prolonged standing, use of ladders and a considerable amount of time spent viewing computer screens.
