The Deputy General Counsel serves as the lead attorney managing the Universityâ™s litigation portfolio, including but not limited to, responding to pre-litigation threats and demands, selection and oversight of outside counsel, assisting with discovery, developing litigation strategy, participating in alternative dispute resolution, and managing cases to final resolution in the court system. The position works closely with other attorneys in the Office of General Counsel and senior management to assure appropriate evaluation, assessment, and resolution of claims and employment matters, including timely status updates. This position is responsible for high-level problem solving of employment matters and providing advice and counsel to University Human Resources and senior leadership, and responds to administrative complaints filed at agencies such as the EEOC, the Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training.
A law degree from an ABA accredited law school
Minimum of 12 years of legal experience litigating complex cases in federal and state courts, and an exceptional record of professional accomplishments
The position requires experience in handling initial demands, knowledge of e-discovery issues, developing discovery and trial strategies, trial experience, and alternative dispute resolution success
A robust employment law practice counseling clients on all aspects of employment law (e.g. Title VII, FMLA, ADA, EEO/AA, and FLSA) is also required.
Strong analytical and creative problem-solving abilities, superior project management skills, excellent research and writing, vigorous advocacy, exceptional communication and client counseling skills
Ability to juggle priorities and multiple, demanding projects
Detail-oriented with organizational proficiency and excellent follow-through
Demonstrated success as an effective team member; collegiality and a sense of humor are valued
Candidates must be admitted in good standing to the Rhode Island Bar, or must become a member within one year of hire
Experience managing outside counsel and handling labor matters are preferred.
