The Journalism Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo is seeking a General Manager to oversee the day-to-day business operation of Mustang Media Group (MMG), an umbrella for four award-winning student media organizations that function as learning laboratories within the Journalism Department. Mustang Media Group includes Mustang News in online, social, email, print and television (MNTV) broadcast; KCPR-FM, an FCC-licensed, non-commercial, educational radio station; and Central Coast PRspectives (CCPR), a student-run public relations agency that also functions as the brand management agency for MMG. These media programs involve more than 200 students from across Cal Poly who are involved in producing editorial content for print, digital and broadcast; music and talk-show programming; advertising sales and design; underwriting and fundraising; business and accounting; marketing and promotions; and delivery.
The General Manager is responsible for the business oversight and long-term strategic planning of Mustang Media Group in consultation with faculty advisors, the department assistant, department chair and the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and consistent with college and university goals. The position is responsible for growing a sustainable revenue stream to support the student media enterprise and building successful working relationships with businesses and organizations on and off campus. The General Manager recruits, hires, trains, supervises and guides a staff of about 20 students in advertising sales and design; underwriting; business and accounting; marketing and promotions; delivery; and related activities. The General Manager works closely with five faculty advisors to ensure that all students involved with Mustang Media Group are provided the learning opportunities needed to be successful in their various roles.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's or higher level degree in marketing, journalism, business or related field.
At least 3 years of experience in advertising sales and marketing for media organizations.
Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Substantial and broad knowledge of the business structure utilized in successful modern media organizations. Ability to integrate and apply this knowledge to anticipate changes and problems in an industry that is continually adjusting to new technology trends and news consumption habits.
Working knowledge of effective management principles including proven supervisory skills with the ability to plan, implement, and manage multiple projects to meet deadlines with a finished and effective product.
Ability to analyze, interpret, compile, integrate and present data and recommendations to various audiences at different levels.
Ability to develop operational procedures and summaries.
Ability to serve as a key technical and business advisor to the Journalism Department and college on strategic planning for the student media organizations.
Advanced knowledge of accepted accounting practices.
Strong negotiation and persuasion skills with ability to prepare and negotiate pricing.
Experience with, and ability to, create annual budgets.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both orally and in writing. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications.
Ability to represent the university and Mustang Media Group in a positive and professional manner to on- and off-campus entities.
At least five years of progressively responsible professional experience in journalism, marketing, sales or PR, preferably with a news organization.
Business management experience with a specialty in advertising.
Demonstrated skills and experience leading employees in a media environment with a service-centered attitude.
Demonstrated skills and experience leading students in an educational environment with a service-centered attitude.
Knowledge and demonstrated advocacy of the First Amendment and student media rights and responsibilities, especially as they apply to the student press in a university setting.
Demonstrated skills and experience working with a media organization that operates on multiple platforms with multiple technologies.
Demonstrated ability to research and develop new strategies and programs to provide critical funding for media programs.
Experience with and knowledge of accounting programs used in the media industry such as Ad Pro.
Demonstrated ability to establish advertising and underwriting revenue goals for various media platforms.
Ability to teach advertising principles, design and sales.
Proficient in Adobe Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and Acrobat), WordPress and social media platforms.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development or to meet with clients.
Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
