The Director of the Social Innovation Initiative will primarily coordinate the development of a vision and strategy, facilitate the design and development of social innovation-related translation and research activities, curriculum and applied learning programs in partnership with stakeholders across campus to meet their needs, and advise and support the integration of social innovation and entrepreneurship across other pillars of Innovate Carolina. The Director will also serve as the project manager for the partnership between the Vice Chancellor for Innovation Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (IEED) and Student Affairs. IEED has agreed to serve as the managing partner of the Campus Y for most of the Y’s activities. The secondary responsibility of this role is to directly influence the conversation around social innovation in higher education through contributing thought leadership and convening institutional leaders on campus and throughout the University of North Carolina system.
Education and Experience:
This position requires excellent program management skills as well as the ability to set priorities, organize and manage multiple planning tasks. Demonstrated leadership and the ability to set and execute on short and long range strategy is critical. In addition, excellent written and verbal communication skills, strict attention to detail, and the ability to work with and through other people are essential. This position requires the ability to work in a model that values distributed leadership. Strong interpersonal, cross-cultural, and communication skills to interact effectively and build cross-disciplinary relationships with faculty, students, Innovate Carolina, Campus Y and other I&E colleagues, University of North Carolina offices, alumni, donors, and external partners are necessary. The role also requires flexibility, adaptability, and comfort with ambiguity and operating in an entrepreneurial environment in making independent decisions. Finally, intellectual curiosity and interest in understanding social innovation, social entrepreneurship, and related fields must be demonstrated.
