The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) , Department of Public Safety is currently recruiting for a Public Information Officer (PIO). The Public Information Officer (PIO) partners with the Office of Communications and Public Affairs (OCPA) to develop and implement a comprehensive press outreach strategy to promote the mission of the University of Maryland, Baltimore Department of Public Safety and drives awareness of relevant programs and initiatives. The PIO will be the primary resource to initiate timely warnings and emergency notifications at the direction of the Chief of Police or the Executive Director of Emergency Management or designee in compliance with the Clery Act. The PIO has a broad understanding of the media landscape and uses creative thinking and smart storytelling to effectively position University of Maryland, Baltimore Department of Public Safety to attract diverse audiences for the department's initiatives and priorities.

Public Relations (50%)
As a collaborative member of the University of Maryland, Baltimore Department of Public Safety, works with the Communications Office to develop communications and media outreach strategies that meet institutional goals and reporting requirements such as Clery Campus Security reporting.
Generate story ideas in order to secure consistent positive coverage in local, regional, national, and industry-specific outlets for appropriate communications.
Assist the Communications Office in nurturing strong relationships in the media community.
Coordinate the distribution of appropriate non-critical press and safety related disclosure materials.
Maintain University of Maryland, Baltimore Department of Public Safety online media room.
Stay up-to-date on relevant topics and issues in order to position University of Maryland, Baltimore Department of Public Safety historical experts in stories and trends as they occur.
Under the direction of the University of Maryland, Baltimore Public Safety Chief of Police or Executive Director for Emergency Management, and in consultation with the Communications Office, assists with crisis communications and issues management as needed.
Regularly track and evaluate the success of press outreach efforts.
Writing & Messaging (25%)
Develop and write key messages for exhibits, programs and initiatives.
Responsible to maintain the Department of Public Safety's website and update the site with appropriate content.
Employ strong writing skills in preparing press releases, media alerts and supporting materials in collaboration with OCPA.
Prepare talking points, op-eds, quotes, and remarks for University of Maryland, Baltimore Department of Public Safety if requested by the Chief of Police.
Internal Collaboration (15%)
Cultivate strong relationships across departments in order ascertain story ideas.
Effectively communicate key messages across the institution to ensure consistency of messaging.
Collaborate with other related University personnel from areas such as Emergency Management and the Office of Communications and Public Affairs as appropriate in order to ensure effective and timely messaging.
Social Media (10%)
Support the creation of social media content as needed by the Digital Communications Manager.
Schedule events to be covered by media to share on appropriate University of Maryland, Baltimore Department of Public Safety social media channels.
Other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in relevant field such as journalism, communications, English or related field.
Experience: Two (2) years of media relations, marketing, public relations, communications, client relations or related field.
Preferred Experience: Prior experience with federal, state, municipal or campus police communications.
Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.
Strong understanding of and background in integrated outreach across multimedia including video, social media, website content, press releases, talking points, etc.
Proven experience pitching local and national media and garnering pick-up.
Strong verbal, writing, editing and proofing skills (these skills may be tested).
Experience with crisis management strategies and situations.
Confident public speaking and presentation skills, comfortable in live interviews.
Above average competency in video creation, scripting, social media, website content management systems, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, database management systems.
Exceptional oral and written communications skills, with preference give for strong storytelling skills.
Broad understanding of the media landscape and the best ways to position information for maximum impact.
Ability to engender and sustain the trust and respect of the media.
Skilled at developing and maintaining relationships both internally and externally.
Self-motivated professional with proven analytical and problem-solving skills, strong decision-making skills.
Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
