Established in 1991, Chicago Cares mobilizes volunteers to build a stronger, more unified Chicago. In 2017, Chicago Cares launched an exciting new Community Investment Strategy to use impact volunteerism as a catalyst for community change efforts on Chicago’s south, west, and northwest sides where the infusion of resources and capacity could be transformational.
Given the daunting challenges facing Chicago today and a renewed emphasis in the non-profit and corporate sectors on impact, isolated acts of generosity are no longer sufficient as we seek to move the needle on large, intractable social problems like violence and poverty. Impact volunteerism responds to this complexity by connecting volunteer service to the civic engagement, community development, and collective impact work already happening on the ground in communities of greatest need.
The Development Coordinator will play a key support role for Chicago Cares’ External Affairs team. They will be primarily responsible for proposal development, donor data management, corporate grant applications, impact reporting, as well as other fundraising and event support functions. A large percentage of the Coordinator’s time will be spent administratively tracking and supporting the extensive existing corporate portfolio, with the opportunity to manage an increasing portfolio of donor relationships over time.
This person will play a key role in the growth of the organization, helping to strategically cultivate and steward corporate sponsors to deepen engagement and increase support. Chicago Cares is looking for an organized, collaborative, and enthusiastic team member who is looking to gain experience in non-profit fundraising, corporate relations, and external affairs.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Donor Cultivation, Solicitation, and Tracking
Participate in planning, strategy setting, and reporting on annual revenue projections
Prepare high-quality proposals, grant applications, and impact reports for donors
Manage donor data by entering and tracking information on corporate partners and gifts and developing the ability to build and generate reports within the Salesforce database
Provide administrative support to the Senior Manager and CEO as they cultivate and solicit their corporate donor portfolios
Secure in-kind gifts according to organizational need
Work closely with program staff to coordinate project planning efforts and ensure donor needs are met
Conduct prospect research as assigned
External Affairs Support
Provide support for large projects and special events, including event planning and implementation assistance (inclusive of Corporate Council, the Chicago Cares Leadership Breakfast, and Serve-a-thon)
Advance brand identity by reinforcing strategic messages and organizational values
Participate in and provide support to all fundraising and stewardship activities
Other duties as assigned including some administrative tasks
Bachelor’s Degree or related experience
1 to 2 years of experience in donor relations, sales, marketing, and/or fundraising
Excellent relationship building and networking skills, including professional demeanor in person, on the phone, and online
Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Strong project management skills, including the ability to take initiative, work independently, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and handle multiple projects at once
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite required
Ability to maintain composure and enthusiasm when working with a variety of personalities
Demonstrated commitment to service, social justice, and/or civic engagement
A flexible schedule, including the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends and take on other functions/duties as assigned
Be able to adjust to various physical and environmental conditions as the position may require including computer work, sitting or standing for long periods of time, etc.
