Exhibition Manager/Public Engagement Coordinator
The Department of Art and Art History in Georgetown College, at Georgetown University comprises two undergraduate programs (Studio Art and Art History), one Master's program (Art and Museum Studies), and art gallery spaces (the flagship Maria and Alberto de la Cruz Art Gallery which opened Fall 2018 and the recently renovated Lucille M. and Richard F.X. Spagnuolo Art Gallery). The galleries currently focus on global professional contemporary artists and also host two faculty and one student art exhibition annually. Interdisciplinary programming co-organized with other University departments is a hallmark of the program.
The Exhibitions Manager/Public Engagement Coordinator of Georgetown University Art Galleries is a full-time term position. The position provides day-to-day support to the Director/Chief Curator of Georgetown University Art Galleries whose primary responsibility is to steer the program and policies of the Maria & Alberto de la Cruz Art Gallery and the Lucille M. and Richard F.X. Spagnuolo Art Gallery. The incumbent will develop and maintain productive working relationships within the wider university and local communities, with artists and art professionals, and with current and prospective donors to promote the galleries and their programs. Duties include but are not limited to:
Tracking gallery budget expenditures (supplies, shipping, artist fees/honoraria/travel costs, services from outside vendors such as art handlers).
Preparing and tracking correspondence and outreach to include event invitations, insurance paperwork, contracts, and Artists/Guest Speakers travel arrangements.
Providing supervision for work-study students, interns, and independent contractors.
Updating and maintaining content on the gallery website, social media channels, and digital signage.
Exhibition Planning, Production and Maintenance
Exhibition project management, to include drafting loan letters/forms and tracking loan request, tracking the budget, making shipping arrangements, organize and oversee installation/de-installation of exhibition artwork, exhibition checklist maintenance, and procurement of services from external vendors.
Planning and production work for public programs, performance art, private events and advisory board meetings.
Maintaining direct contact with artists and their gallerists, assistants and collectors for the purpose of exhibition and program planning.
Ensuring the safe display of borrowed artworks by monitoring facilities including climate systems, and security protocol.
Editing, designing and ordering didactic displays including vinyl wall texts and object labels.
Event, Public Program Coordination and Outreach
Planning and coordinating production work for public programs, performance art events and private function rentals; including collaborating with other departments within the University and with various external stakeholders and vendors.
Providing facility supervision during both public open hours and some special events.
Coordinating an integrated marketing plan to promote exhibitions and programs using traditional and digital outlets (including social media platforms).
MA preferred, BA required (Art History, Arts Administration, Studio Art or Museum Studies preferred).
Minimum of two (2) years of relevant, professional experience in the planning, project management, and preparation of professional art exhibitions. Experience in a registrar's office and/or with public engagement programs an asset.
Excellent organization, communication (written and oral), interpersonal and collaboration skills.
Familiarity with trends in global contemporary art including artists, institutions, dealers and collectors; an existing network of professional contacts in these categories is preferred.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress and social media platforms.
Some evening and weekend work hours required.
