The Center for Educational Partnerships (CEP) is the primary unit on campus charged with developing and implementing programs and strategies to improve academic preparation, expand educational opportunities, and ensure access to higher education and to the University of California for low-income and educationally-disadvantaged students. Working in partnership with local schools and communities, CEP improves academic achievement and expands post-secondary educational opportunities for students who face significant barriers to college.
The PUENTE PROJECT MIDDLE SCHOOL TRAINING COORDINATOR is specifically responsible for the Puente Project’s Middle School Program: professional development and training and curriculum development for middle school teachers and counselors, including coaching, support, communication, and research. As part of a cross-disciplinary team, this position is responsible for program development and implementation at middle schools with Puente programs and for supporting its growth through informational presentations to schools and school district faculty and administration and their stakeholders
Training and Research •Collaborate in the development of on-going training and related materials for the middle school component. •As part of a team, develop, conduct and evaluate the 7-day institute and ongoing training workshops throughout the year to train Puente team members. •Through e-mail and telephone conversations and site visits, support and monitor the work of teachers and counselors throughout the year. •Keep abreast of research on educationally disadvantaged student populations and provide innovative strategies and methods for Puente teachers and counselors to apply in the program. •Collaborate with other coordinators to develop trainings that further institutionalize the Puente Community Leadership Component. •Provide training and opportunities for team members to develop and deliver presentations at Puente and non-Puente trainings. •Design and implement special projects, including curricular teaching and counselor units, as needed. •Assist in development and maintenance of the program’s web-pages.
Program Implementation •With high school teacher coordinator, manage and promote Puente's year-round writing portfolio assessment. •Assist in the selection of qualified site program teachers and counselors. •Develop reporting mechanisms to monitor program implementation. •Provide regular written reports to the program director regarding the status of the middle school component. •Prepare for, attend and participate in training and program meetings and statewide conference calls. •As required, make presentations to middle schools interested in implementing the program, to professional, educational and community audiences; and at conferences and organizations about the Puente Project. •Work collaboratively with other Puente Training Coordinators to develop and implement classroom activities, including writing, connected to the Community Leadership component. •Work collaboratively with other Puente training coordinators to monitor the implementation of the Puente Project model, and apply quality assurance practices.•At least four years in a middle school setting. •Demonstrated success in creating curriculum and strategies that support educationally underserved students’ learning and path to college. •Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of Latino and other multicultural literature and cultures to facilitate students’ home to school connections and accelerate students’ literacy skills. •Demonstrated success in designing presentations and informational workshops. •Demonstrated understanding of asset-based approaches to teaching both adults and students. •Demonstrated interest and success in community-building among and between adults and students. •Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment. •Demonstrated knowledge of current research literature relating to educationally disadvantaged students. •Strong project management skills. Ability to prioritize work assignments and manage multiple critical projects with deadlines. •Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities. •Highly skilled in communicating clearly and effectively verbally and in writing. Strong interpersonal skills. •Education/Training: BA degree or equivalent experience. •Licenses or certifications:CA Teacher Credential and/or PPS Counseling Credential.
