Departmental Overview The College of Engineering at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. With more than 250 regular faculty members, 2,150 graduate students and 3,450 undergraduate students located in seven academic departments, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus.
The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences is the largest academic department on the UC Berkeley campus consisting of over 130 faculty, adjunct, active emeriti and PIR appointments, 3,000 undergraduates between the College of Engineering and Letters and Science, more than 700 graduate students, and 65 staff members. Computer Science operates research and instructional laboratories in Soda Hall and Sutardja Dai Hall, and Electrical Engineering operates like facilities in Cory Hall and Sutardja Dai Hall. EECS also has a significant technical staff support structure to provide support for research and instructional laboratories and fabrication facilities.
The position involves recommending, developing, implementing, administering, coordinating, and/or evaluating the electronic, media, visual, written communications needs of the department.
The EECS website and printed publications deliver information about department education, research programs and services externally to prospective students, the technical industry and the public in general. Communication materials developed by this position impact student enrollment, college ranking, industrial relations and the technology industry and U.S. state and national government agencies.
Internally the EECS website provides the means necessary for students, faculty and staff to access information they need:
For students - class schedules, degree requirements, faculty contact info, research areas and projects.
For faculty - class scheduling, room reservations, faculty schedules, administrative services, and emergency information.
For staff- faculty/student information, scheduling, and building and emergency information.
This position serves as the sole web and print designer for the EECS department. Key functions of this position include website development, producing communications or instruction using the web, audio, video, and other electronic media, which may involve writing, editing, designing, and/or production. It also involves producing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating the production of printed and/or electronic books, catalogs, publications, manuscripts, promotional and other materials. Confers with the Department Chairs and Director of Operations, External Relations Group (XRG), faculty, writers, web programming specialists, project directors and related staff in the preparation and production of proposed electronic, media, and written publications; verifies that format of copy conforms to printing and/or electronic publishing specifications.
This position provides one the major roles in the organization of a key event in EECS, the Berkeley EECS Annual Research Symposium (BEARS) which showcases research conducted in the department for external audiences - prospective students, the technical industry and general public.
Responsibilities 55% Manages comprehensive communications programs, including written, visual, and electronic communications. Advises and consults with departmental/college administration regarding all aspects of communications including developing strong communications strategies that effectively deliver the desired message, policy interpretation, and problem resolution. Ensures production of high quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints.
Key areas include:
Website Design and Content Management:
Writes copy and finds images for department announcements and news for target audiences. Independently researches news items relating to all aspects of the department: research, education, administration, etc.
Verifies that all web content is truthful, grammatically correct, allowed under copyright, and complies with the department brand.
Plans website designs for department conferences and events by clarifying goals, designing functionality, and creating presentation that meets both communication goals and department/campus brand standards.
Develops site navigation by categorizing content to enable visitors to quickly find the content they need.
Develops site content and graphics by obtaining and/or writing copy, obtaining and/or taking photographs; design images, icons, banners; incorporates video and other external content etc.
Manages departmental YouTube channel and LinkedIn department profile; assists staff with department Instagram and Twitter accounts.
Prepares sites using HTML and CSS, authoring and formatting tools.
Creates designs and CSS implementations for other web-based services in the department: wall displays, database-generated web pages, event calendar.
Verifies cross-platform compatibility and accessibility and modifies site when necessary to achieve these two requirements.
On a regular schedule and as needed, updates web content and graphics; monitors performance and results; identifies and evaluates improvement options; maintains links.
Maintains site appearance by developing and enforcing content and display standards; edits submissions from faculty, students, and staff.
Performs testing and troubleshooting on departmental websites.
Collects and edits information on research projects, labs and centers. Enters information into departmental database for web page generation.
Consults faculty and management about project's purpose and goals.
Plans concept based on information gathered, departmental norms, and professional knowledge.
Illustrates concept by designing rough layout of art and copy regarding arrangement, size, type size and style, and related aesthetic concepts.
Obtains approval of concept by submitting rough layout for approval.
Prepares final layout according to specifications provided by outside agencies, art services, printers, etc.
Completes projects by coordinating with outside agencies, art services, printers, etc.
**Maintains technical knowledge by attending conferences and workshops and reviewing professional materials.
25% Works with management and clients to create, develop, and implement long and short term strategic communications plans and/or projects. Identifies specific communications needs and develops the content and process for organizational improvements.
20% Provides guidance and support for staff working with campus and departmental digital communications resources:
Organizes administrative use of campus-wide and external resources such as bMail and other Google Apps, Box, and other tools as needed to support staff needs. This includes management of the department's many special purpose accounts and their associated resources and the many resource calendars. Makes sure staff have access to the tools they need to do their jobs.
Works with staff to develop processes for using shared accounts and tools in a way that best supports both current work and business continuity.
Identifies areas in staff work processes that can be improved or streamlined and develops solutions. *Provides training and best practices documentation for staff working with departmental websites and campus communications resources. *Manages e-mail lists on the department's list server and on Google Groups.
Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and/or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to target and/or broad general audiences.
Ability to photograph people and events in the department, document subjects, and obtain model release forms.
Solid skills in interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen.
Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, editorial style, and punctuation, including skill to write in a clear and lively style.
Knowledge of campus protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
Ability to understand and edit raw HTML and CSS.
Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education.
Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
