GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The ABE Co-instructor for Manufacturing Engineering, for the grant-funded Manufacturing Advancement Center Workforce Innovation Collaborative Certification (MACWIC 1) Integrated Education and Training (IET) Program, is responsible for writing the Adult Basic Education (ABE) curriculum and co-facilitating with the Manufacturing Engineering Instructor and the Career Navigator to support students as they prepare to demonstrate their overall competency in five core skills areas of the MACWIC 1 certification exam: Shop Math, Blueprint Reading, Metrology & Quality Inspection, Safety, and Work Readiness. The ABE Instructor, the Manufacturing Engineering Instructor, and the Career Navigator will support ABE students in attaining the MACWIC 1 certificate. The focus will be on developing and teaching a 13-week applied manufacturing curriculum to 10-15 students, conducted under the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Vocational Technical Education Frameworks for the Manufacturing, Engineering & Technology Services Occupation Cluster.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Following research-based best practices in Adult Education, the ABE Instructor for MACWIC 1 will support the MACWIC 1 Manufacturing Engineering Instructor by:
Co-teaching and/or reinforcing the MACWIC 1curriculum that is aligned with the standards in the (DESE) Vocational Technical Education Frameworks for the Manufacturing, Engineering & Technology Services Occupation Cluster.
Becoming aware of students' needs and goals.
Preparing students for college or further education and careers.
Developing students' digital literacy, academic, and metacognitive skills.
Using a variety of instructional methods, techniques, and tools, to include differentiated instruction and scaffolding, to accommodate differences in learning styles to develop student skills in math, writing, reading, social studies, science, and other related subjects.
Write and co-teach the curriculum with support from the Manufacturing Engineering Instructor and the IET Career Navigator.
Teach the required number of weekly sessions, adding make-up sessions as needed.
Prepare and submit a 13-week curriculum with weekly lesson plans that align with the Vocational Technical Education Frameworks for the Manufacturing, Engineering & Technology Services Occupation Cluster to help students pass the certification test with an 85-100% pass rate.
Record and monitor student attendance accurately and communicate information to Co-instructor, Career Navigator and/or program administrators.
Communicate with the co-teachers and administrative staff regarding any student, class, curriculum, programmatic challenges or issues.
Assist with intake, orientation, assessment and counseling, as needed.
Arrange for substitute teachers, when needed, and provide appropriate lesson plans for them.
Submit required documentation in accordance with deadlines.
Attend weekly staff meetings and planning meetings with co-teachers, as needed.
Collaborate with curriculum development and other programmatic issues/events, as needed.
Bachelor's degree in education, or another related field.
Three or more years of experience in adult education.
Demonstrated experience in a successful, cooperative co-writing and co-teaching curriculum.
At least 2 years of experience teaching math.
Excellent problem-solving skills.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of diverse adult populations in ABE programs.
Demonstrated experience using formative and summative assessments to inform teaching.
Ability to teach digital literacy skills to students.
Excellent organizational skills.
Experience with multicultural students.
Ability to relate to the needs and interests of adult students.
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:
Knowledge of the MACWIC 1 certification program.
COMPENSATION: $28.29/hour for curriculum writing, 4 hours/week of class time, 4 hours/week of planning time, plus 2 hours/week for planning meetings with Co-teacher and Career Navigator. Approximate period of employment: March - June 2019. Non-benefited, grant-funded, MCCC Unit Position.
