The Senior Writer, under the supervision of the Senior Director, Advancement Communications, will create a wide range of digital and print communications pieces for the Institutional Advancement team, prioritizing major and principal gift proposals and sales tools. The Sr. Writer will also manage the IA/alumni social media presence.
Research, write, proofread, and edit solicitation letters, briefing documents, proposals, one pagers, reports, stewardship communications, general correspondence, presentations, volunteer resources, and other materials required to support the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors, volunteers, and prospects. Design and format written proposals and sales tools in adherence with Illinois Tech graphic quality standards using design software. Perform related research activities and conduct interviews with Illinois Tech faculty, staff, alumni, students, friends, and volunteers. Ensure literature racks with fundraising materials are kept stocked and pieces are current.
As project manager, oversee details of multiple communications projects (including basic layout, writing, editing), balance priorities, and meet project deadlines and deliverables in collaboration with the Principal Gifts team, the Vice President of Institutional Advancement, and other project owners and stakeholders within IA and across the university.
The Senior Writer will co-supervise a full-time student worker. He or she will manage the intake and completion of IA communications team editing projects, assigning editing as needed, compiling input, and collaborating with clients to provide editing services in keeping with Chicago Manual of Style, university, and IA style standards.
Education & Experience :
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate communications related discipline required. Minimum of five to seven years professional writing and editing experience required. Experience writing, planning, executing, and evaluating communications vehicles is essential. Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style is required. University development, alumni relations, and communications experience strongly preferred. Social media strategy and skills required.
Knowledge & Skills :
Superior written and oral communication skills required, with the ability to establish standards of quality, to communicate those standards clearly, and to assess the effectiveness of communications based on those standards. Ability to understand complex, scientific, or technical information and communicate it clearly in high quality, effective, communications pieces.
Strong decision making skills along with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities in a fast paced environment, as is, demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively. Must be discreet and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite strongly preferred. Microsoft Office and Google applications skills required.
