The Associate Director of API Platform Architecture and Solutions is a hands-on technical role that will directly and indirectly lead a small team responsible for the strategy, roadmap, and implementation of Harvard's API technology and ecosystem. The leader taking the role will develop an influential partnership with development teams, other IT leaders, and business stakeholders and will champion the critical role of the enterprise API platform and solutions architecture within Harvard's technology ecosystem. This role requires hands-on development and architecture competencies as well as strong abilities to explain complex topics to an organizationally diverse group of stakeholders.
The Associate Director of API Platform Architecture and Solutions will deliver value for customers and business by managing the API platform and solutions product development process by collaborating with external and internal stakeholders, aligning with leadership, and managing the scope and timelines of projects and operational delivery.
Principal duties and responsibilities:
Lead the API Platform Team:
Building and Leading an Enterprise API Platform Architecture and Solutions practice within Harvard University IT (HUIT)
Define the strategy and processes needed to achieve architectural, operational, and engineering excellence including the creation and maintenance of a living roadmap
Oversee the collection of business and functional product requirements and create an evergreen, prioritized backlog through engagement with key partners and stakeholders
Drive down unit cost and time-to-value of software integration work, with DevSecOps, release automation, and re-usable software engineering patterns as key ingredients
Establish platform and API architecture KPIs and a reporting framework that clearly and simply communicates progress against established goals
Build Organizational Partnerships:
Actively leverage synergies with other teams in Harvard University IT including Application Technology Services (ATS), Academic Technology Services (AcTS), Harvard Library, and the Office of the CTO
Advise and provide guidance to business and IT leaders on the advantages of using shared integration and digital ecosystem capabilities
Oversee the creation of stakeholder personas and uncover/document cross-functional, cross-organizational business processes that demonstrate areas of opportunity for value creation
Develop and promote innovative integration and data exchange practices across Harvard IT, with associated training and talent programs
Develop, through stakeholder collaboration, a cohesive vision for our APIs, including conceptualization, ideation, opportunity assessment and prioritization.
Collaborate with a wide range of external and internal stakeholders to bring new APIs to market.
Customer-first mindset with demonstrated ability to understand and act on customer insight; generate new product and service offerings ideas based on customer data and insights

Union: 00 - Non Union, Exempt or Temporary
10+ years of leadership/management experience, with some of that time in a product management role
10+ years experience with software integration
5+ years experience with API management and integration middleware
Experience with API management platforms such as MuleSoft or a comparable product
Ability to teach others the art of designing product APIs
Experience with both Agile and Lean development methodologies
Deep passion for Data Integration/Data Exchange architectures and how new offerings and capabilities can meaningfully drive engagement, empowerment, and the overall consumer experience.
Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to link product design and features to strategic objectives while using hard data and metrics to substantiate up assumptions and recommendations.
Ability to not simply multitask, but to quickly and efficiently delineate the work into high ROI action items while effectively managing and adapting to evolving priorities in a decisive manner.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to concisely and effectively convey your rationale and needed actions to engage diverse audiences and influence senior executives.
Track record in taking on end-to-end ownership and successfully delivering results.
Strategic approach to problem resolution as well as the ability to develop and communicate a sound plan.
Master data management or analytics experience is a plus
