The Product Engineer is responsible for the coordination of new products through the manufacturing process. This is accomplished by utilizing various principles of engineering, manufacturing technology, and project management. These principles are used at all department levels and require clear and concise communication. To communicate these principles the Product Engineer will utilize project management systems and follow ISO document requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Designs and develops new products started internally or from an external source. Responsible in becoming an expert in the proper use of the design, end-user application, and any standards associated with the new design; and for the final design and development of the new product. Will be responsible for keeping the design Journal up to date regardless if the design is internal or external, and will get approval from the R&D Manager before moving the final design to production.
Works with the manufacturing engineer and provide the technical information required to complete new product production checklist, and create solid works file that includes the assembly and BOM. The Product Engineer is responsible for making sure required information to complete production is provided without error. In the absence of a Manufacturing Engineer, the Product Engineer will be required to create all the required documentation.
Provides supply chain with required information to source required material, parts, or finishing. Creates prints for outsourced parts with tolerances and specifications for supply chain to solicit quotes and to determine an approved supplier for production. Determines cut lengths and any special requirements for converting dimensions to weight and vice versa, and is responsible for specifying any finishing or coating requirements to Manufacturing Engineer for input into Macola and travelers.
Coordinates with Machining manager on the machining, fabrication, and finishing of parts. Provides a machining checklist, solid works file, and part prints with tolerances to the shop machinist to create fixtures, tooling, and programs necessary for the production of parts. Provide to the Manufacturing Engineer all the required information necessary to create travelers and set up instructions for the machining, fabrication, sanding, tumbling, finishing or any other requirements to make a finished part. In the absence of a ME or machinist, the Product Engineer will create the required information. Works with the Assembly Manager to coordinate manufacturing of new products, and develops or acquires any tools, fixtures, or machines required to complete the assembly of the final product. Provides the Manufacturing Engineer with the product information to create travelers for assembly instructions, SWI’s, and quality inspections procedure. Assists assembly in the development of written instructions for training programs for assemblers on the proper assembly of the finished good.
The Product Engineer works with quality to assist in determining what inspections, tolerances, first article inspections, or standards are necessary for the final product.
Responsible for assisting Manufacturing Engineer with any technical questions in regard to the manufacturing of existing products. In the absence of a Manufacturing Engineer or if specific information is required then the Product Engineer is to perform the duties of the Manufacturing Engineer.
These are the minimum qualifications required to successfully perform the job:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
3-5 years’ experience in production design and manufacturing
Aptitude for working with complex parts and assemblies
Proven track record of taking ownership and driving results
Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Some knowledge with CAD/CAM software
Some knowledge with basic manual machining and fabrication
Basic understanding of CNC machining
Excellent communication and good presentation skills
