Departmental Overview The College of Environmental Design (CED) operates three academic departments - Architecture, City and Regional Planning and Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning - conferring both undergraduate and graduate degrees. CED has 55 full-time and 35 part-time teaching faculty, 44 career staff, and over 1,000 students. The operations of the College are financed with state funds, gifts and endowments and other revenue sources in an amount roughly totaling $18,000,000 annually.
Responsibilities This position is a temporary, part-time, entry-level position in the College of Environmental Design's Digital Fabrication Lab (DFL). Candidates should have working knowledge of general digital fabrication technologies, with an emphasis on laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC cutting systems as well as an array of software like Rhino and Illustrator to drive these machines. Under the direction of the DFL Manager or Principle Mechanician, this position will monitor DFL users and equipment, provide orientations and safety training, review digital files, supervise users and intervene when necessary to assure proper equipment use. On an ad-hoc basis this employee may be required to present a specialty workshop or equipment orientation, may be assigned small fabrication or installation projects for the College. Candidates are required to stay updated on and must adhere to EH&S and Cal-OSHA compliance rules, regulations, and trainings.
Experience with digital fabrication technologies: 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC.
Experience working and supervisor users in a digital fabrication environment.
Strong communications skills and experience in teaching technical skills desired.
Adept in rapid-prototyping processes with a wide range of materials.
Abilities to consult, advise, and problem solve on instructional or research activities.
Ability to read, write and follow oral/written instructions provided in English.
Able to support and actively contribute to a highly collaborative team environment.
Must have strong customer-service skills and positive attitude.
Availability to work nights, weekends, holidays and emergencies.
Must be able to access work sites including heights, confined spaces; walk and stand for extended periods; lift 50 lbs.
Strong interpersonal skills including sensitivity, tact and diplomacy.
Incumbent must possess a high level of motivation and initiative.
Attend mandatory annual safety training.
Bachelor's Degree in relevant field of study preferred.
