Departmental Overview The Colleges of Chemistry (CoC) and Engineering (CoE) at UC Berkeley are recognized for their educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top one to three Science and Engineering programs in the United States. The combined Colleges have close to 300 regular faculty members, 2000 graduate students and 3500 undergraduate students located in nine academic departments. The College of Chemistry and College of Engineering prepares scientists and engineers with the multidisciplinary skills to lead enterprises of all scales, in industry, government and the nonprofit sector.
The professional Master of Molecular Science and Software Engineering (MSSE) graduate program within the College of Chemistry and in collaboration with the College of Engineering, prepares post-baccalaureate students for career paths that lead to software positions and managerial and executive positions in software technology enabled companies and organizations as well as entrepreneurial ventures. The program combines leadership coursework in innovation, teamwork and management with intensive study in an area of technical specialization of software engineering tied to large scale scientific computing, data science, and advanced algorithms. The Executive Director will report to the Assistant Dean of Finance and Administration in the College of Chemistry with a strong dotted line reporting to the faculty Program Director of the MSSE Degree.
The responsibilities of the MSSE Executive Director include the management and marketing of a significant, independent academic or research program; execution of all strategic planning endeavors; program development and coordination; academic affairs; online course implementation and refreshment; and budget matters under the scope of the MSSE Program. This position will also take a lead role in establishing connections to the software and data science industries to assist program graduates in technology translation and career placement. The Executive Director will also perform student advising and program administration.
Responsibilities Operational excellence for the MSSE degree - In collaboration with the Faculty Program Director, the Executive Director will direct and administer an independent program with following responsibility:
Makes recommendations and implements decisions on operational and budget processes, programmatic staff FTE, finance, human resources and space planning that have program-wide impact.
Advises faculty on matters concerning several functional areas, department and/or constituencies.
Develops consistent and efficient business practices to support programs.
Compiles and maintains data and effective metrics that are used to make decisions.
Works with campus and the colleges to secure space and facilities support to accommodate growth of programs.
Facilitates curriculum planning
Implements instructional policies (course content and core offerings) approved by the ladder faculty
Collaborates with academia and industry to define capstone projects with software engineering relevance
Identifies viable and cost-effective online curriculum delivery
Coordinates with campus and UCOP units to complete or renew required academic reviews, tuition and financial aid proposals, and accreditation documents.
Manages the financial and budgetary aspects of the program in coordination with the assistant deans of each college. Monitors revenue for programs and adjusts staffing levels and activities as needed.
Oversees the student advising and administrative staff assigned to the MSSE program.
Coordinates recruitment and admissions with the faculty and administrative staff
Assesses program's effectiveness, and recommends changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly, including, tuition, gifts and endowments, new philanthropy, corporate support and executive education
Develops and communicates revenue sharing model with relevant partners
Provides intellectual leadership in curriculum development
Career Services for MSSE students - In collaboration with external partners, student services and career placement professionals:
Creates and implements specialized career planning and development service
Assists with post-degree job placement, leveraging strategic industrial partnerships
MSSE Degree Marketing - In collaboration with onsite and offsite marketing efforts:
Promotes program to prospective students
Promotes programs to academic, governmental lab, and industry partners
Identifies and cultivates prospective new industrial partnerships
Online course creation and implementation and refreshment
Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short term and long-term planning
Represents the organization in working with funding agencies and sponsors, developing financial resources and programs.
Academic background, technical proficiency, and experience in selected area of research involving computational science or software-related fields.
