The Testing and Access Assistance Specialist provides or arranges for reasonable testing and access assistant accommodations for students with disabilities. The Testing and Access Assistance Specialist collects, monitors and maintains student testing information including additional accommodation needs such as note-taking, audio description, document conversion, etc. This person facilitates communication among the following: Disability Resource Center and faculty, students and instructors, DRC, students and other University offices and colleges across the Twin Cities campus. The Testing and Access Assistance Specialist also participates in on-going access assistant (student worker) training and outreach activities in Disability Resource Center and the University both as a spokesperson for the area/unit and as a participant in professional development activities.
The Testing and Access Assistance Specialist also provides expertise in developing on-going case-noting, record-keeping and monitoring all accommodated tests, and use of access assistants (student workers) in Disability Resource Center and throughout the University. This person provides on-going development and delivery of training to student workers.
The Testing and Access Assistance Specialist shows evidence of substantial knowledge of disability and diversity issues and demonstrates the ability to interact positively with individuals from diverse communities. Additionally, this person demonstrates the ability to create a positive, productive work environment that supports teamwork and promotes access for students with disabilities.
Essential Functions: Direct Service- 80%* • Provide information, support, and accommodations to students with disabilities. • Facilitate communication and provide on-going consultation and problem solving in the areas of testing and access assistant accommodations for students with disabilities faculty, and staff. • Promote student self-advocacy, independence and development. • Recommend, develop and implement testing and access assistant guidelines and procedures that safeguard the legal rights and responsibilities of students and the University. • Develop and oversee administration and operation of testing and access assistant accommodations. • Hire, train, direct and supervise and provide on-going training for thirty to forty-five student workers.
*Percentage breakdowns regarding responsibilities may vary depending on the staffing needs of this unit of Disability Resource Center.
Institutional Support (DRC work groups and/or University committees) (10%) • Attend and participate in unit and all-staff meetings. • Participate in work groups as recommended or assigned. • Participate in University committees, task forces and networks upon the recommendation and/or approval of the Associate Director.
Outreach – (5%) • Provide training and presentations to University units and to the community on relevant accommodation issues. • Provide consultation/technical assistance in the areas of testing and access assistant accommodations as needed or requested by individuals and groups at the University so that they have the expertise to administer accommodations within their department and college.
Professional Activity (training and professional development) - (5%) • Join and serve relevant professional organization(s). • Attend accommodations conferences and programs. • Network with testing professionals at the University of Minnesota and other institutions. • Participate in University organizations serving individuals with disabilities.
This is a 100%, 10 month position with benefits.
Minimum/Essential Qualifications: • High School Diploma/GED and five years related experience to include project management. Coursework in a related field may substitute for some years of experience. Additional skills and knowledge may be required of individual positions. • Experience working with people with disabilities and demonstrated knowledge of federal and state laws regarding access for people with disabilities • Demonstrated experience in, and an ongoing commitment to, working effectively with and across diverse communities: including people of color, underrepresented groups and new immigrant populations; American Indians; people with both visible and invisible disabilities; women; people of various gender and sexual identities and expressions; and first-generation students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications: • Familiarity with the University of Minnesota • Demonstrated knowledge of disability-related accommodation needs and resources. • Demonstrated excellent communication, organization and administration skills. • Ability to anticipate and manage program needs and fluctuating service demands. • Is an effective spokesperson for their area/unit with others both inside and outside their area/unit. • Demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement. • Demonstrates a substantial knowledge of issues regarding diversity. • Understands and supports teamwork in the workplace.
