Departmental Overview The Charles and Louise Travers department of Political Science is one of the largest on the Berkeley Campus. There are approximately 50 faculty, along with 9 staff members, 900 undergraduate students and 150 PhD students. Our courses are among the most popular on campus and within the College of Letters and Science. The office is a busy environment and a pleasant place to work.
The purpose of this position is to perform a wide range of graduate student services and duties for the department of political science. The position provides assistance to the department chair, faculty, staff and students in academic advising, recruitment, admissions, financial aid, the evaluation and awarding of fellowships and block grant funds, student orientation and events, career counseling, and related programs. The department employs two graduate student services advisors who work collaboratively to provide a full complement of graduate services to faculty and students.
Applying advanced Student Services concepts, provides the most complex student services to the department's management, faculty and students.
Serves as primary advisor for progression toward degree; advises students on academic advancement such as MA/second year paper, field and qualifying exams, and dissertation committee formation. Drafts second year review letters for faculty.
Serves as liaison between students and graduate division degrees office. Leads informational sessions for current graduate students on planning and degree completion, academic programming activities/opportunities.
Makes recommendations for the improvement of graduate student funding, curriculum, policies and procedures to department leadership. In addition, advises leadership on areas needing clarification and identifying solutions; analyzes the consequences of organization's academic policies and recommends new or changed policies; recommends solutions to organization's problems without precedent.
Academic Advising: Identifies and refers for resolution intricate student issues/grievances such as alleged discrimination, complex grade dispute issues, and students' personal crises; recommends petition exceptions that affect the requirements of multiple departments; facilitates new course approval through interaction with the Coordination of College Policy, Academic Senate, or similar organization.
Assists Student Services Advisor 3 with recruitment and admissions: Advises department/school/college on outreach strategies, and helps identify targeted institutions to meet organization's goals; coordinates, reviews and advises chair/dean and faculty on transferability and applicability of non-UC Berkeley courses.
Financial Aid: Recommends resolution of extremely sensitive, specialized, and/or complex financial aid issues; and administers graduate division funding sources (Block Grant, Braden and MacDonald funds). Working in collaboration with the Director of Administration, administers department endowment funding to graduate student packages. Advises organization's management on available graduate division funds for entering students based upon special funding from all graduate division sources. Tracks and processes graduate student travel stipends and travel and entertainment reimbursement for all graduate student travel and entertainment.
Recruits, places and hires all department GSIs and Readers, making considerations for faculty and student preferences and discipline expertise. Serves as liaison to CSS HR partner for any GSI/Reader hiring or compensation issue resolution.
Solely plans, executes and evaluates complex, high-visibility departmental events including department commencement, the annual Fall Welcome reception, and new student orientation. In collaboration with the student services advisor 3, plans and implements graduate student visit day.
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Experience serving and supporting graduate students.
Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of university-specific computer application programs and knowledge of university and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
Ability in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership.
Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
Ability to manage, and accurately document use of, financial resources in compliance with University requirements.
