Castilleja School is an all-girls school dedicated to excellence in educating young women and in cultivating young leaders. The library team collaborates with classroom faculty to ensure that students master vital skills of information access and evaluation, with a particular emphasis on critical thinking about information quality and reliability. Members of the library staff are purposefully engaged with institution-wide initiatives and work to forward the strategic goals of the school.
The Library Services Specialist supports the Director of Library Services. They provide a welcoming and helpful presence at the library circulation desk, manages circulation and cataloging and maintains the library management system (LMS). Our library is the hub of a community of avid readers. The Library Services Specialist contributes to the development and maintenance of an excellent collection of materials, both physical and electronic, to support students in pursuing their academic and personal goals and interests. They answer reference questions and support students and employees in conducting research. They collaborate in support of activities and programs throughout the school year that promote student engagement in such topics as contemporary literature and issues in media literacy. The Library Services Specialist also manages the library’s digital presence across several platforms.The Library Services Specialist coordinates and is assisted by a team of parent and student volunteers. The Library Services Specialist’s hours are 9:30-6:00 Monday through Thursday and 9:00-5:30 on Fridays.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Contributes to tasks and projects related to all elements of the library program
Provides a welcoming presence at the Reference and Circulation desk
Monitors student behavior in the library, maintaining a positive atmosphere for collaborative and independent study
Answers reference questions and supports student and faculty research and use of library materials, both physical and electronic
Contributes to ongoing, thoughtful development and weeding of the collection
Contributes to readers’ advisory services
Processes new materials, including cataloging and classification
Modifies records in the ILS for the purpose of enhancing bibliographic control
Manages the library’s web presence, creating content for the library website and social media to promote library materials and goals
Generates marketing and communication materials for the library program
Maintains Integrated Library System (ILS), tracking necessary updates, troubleshooting, and considering alternative solutions for library services in collaboration with members of the technology department
Manages circulation, including requests for new materials, hold requests, lost, and overdue materials
Coordinates parent volunteers and student assistants (TAs)
Maintains appealing library displays; manages shelving and shelf reading
During summer break assists in the tech department as needed
Advanced degree or certification in Library Information Sciences or other related field of study preferred
Prior experience in a middle, high school, college or university library and/or working with groups of children and teens preferred
Must be able to establish and maintain a positive, comfortable atmosphere for students and faculty working in the library
Affinity for and familiarity with contemporary literature for children and young adults
Familiarity with a range of common technology applications is essential, including Wordpress and social media applications, as well as willingness to develop facility with new applications
Basic knowledge of desktop publishing required; facility with design and layout of promotional materials strongly preferred
Applicant must be collaborative, able to work cohesively as a member of a team, and assist wherever needed
