The Cancer Support Community (CSC), the largest nonprofit provider of social and emotional support for people affected by cancer, is seeking an Education Director for its headquarters in Washington, DC. Grounded in the mission to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community, the aim of the Education Department is to develop patient educational programs and campaigns and to make them broadly available to the cancer support community, particularly patients, caregivers, and families.
The Education Director must possess a passion and commitment to CSC’s mission. Reporting to the Senior Director of Education & Outreach, the Education Director will be responsible for managing multiple projects and initiatives that support the development, delivery, and evaluation of the Cancer Support Community’s national education programs. This includes the development of education materials and programs for people impacted by cancer through CSC’s flagship education program “Frankly Speaking About Cancer,” our website www.CancerSupportCommunity.org, and other educational initiatives. The ideal individual for this role will have: at least three years of project management experience, ideally in a nonprofit or publication setting; excellent written and oral communications skills; excellent plain language writing and editing skills; knowledge of health literacy best practices; and at least a Bachelor’s degree in social and behavioral sciences, public health, or communications. The ideal candidate will also be a highly effective collaborator, a creative thinker, and have a strong interest in and ability to develop educational programming and communications.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage multiple Education dept. programs and projects through concept development, content development, writing plain language health copy, advisory board and medical review, editing, layout, printing, dissemination, and promotion.
Ensure education materials are up-to-date, accurate, and accessible to the cancer
Collaborate with advocacy partners and health care experts in the development and medical review of
Oversee content development, focus group testing of educational materials and concepts, photo shoots, video shoots, and video editing. Oversee vendors who provide these services to CSC.
Oversee development of interactive eLearning quick guides, and oversee vendors who help CSC develop these materials.
Spearhead the Department’s efforts to increase publication distribution through numerous stakeholders, including advocacy, health care professionals/ organizations, and community partners.
Assist in the Department’s efforts to expand its education programming for numerous audiences, including adolescents and young adults, elderly, African American, people who do not speak English as a first language, people who live in rural communities, and Use health literacy best-practices to ensure materials are written at appropriate reading levels and are culturally-adapted to the target audience.
Develop and implement a style guide that includes health literacy best practices and sample wording for our Frankly Speaking About Cancer materials, ensuring consistency of language and style across materials, whether they are written and designed in-house or by our contract medical/plain language health writers and designers.
Oversee efforts to add more evaluation and documentation of outcomes to education programs and publications.
Oversee analysis of needs assessment, evaluation, survey, and focus group data.
Oversee writing and submission of abstracts, posters, and oral presentations to academic conferences. Oversee development and submission of occasional written manuscripts to academic journals.
Expand outreach through managing and staffing exhibit booths at national conferences.
Develop and foster partnerships by attending community events and
Assist in the development of grant proposals, including writing content and online submission of proposals and
Generate mid-year and annual reports for the
Manage administrative tasks, including contractual and cooperative agreements, payment processing, project expenses, and other duties as
Represent CSC at external stakeholder meetings and professional
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social or behavioral sciences (e.g., Public Health, Health Communication, Social Work, Social Psychology, Sociology or related health and human services fields), communications, or related field, Masters preferred;
Minimum of three years of project management experience, preferably in a health education or health communications position. Prefer experience in cancer patient education development;
Excellent written and oral communications skills, including knowledge of plain language health writing and health literacy best practices. Candidates will be asked to share samples of health related, patient directed writing samples in plain language.
CHES, MCHES, or similar certification preferred;
Highly effective interpersonal skills, with the ability to quickly develop productive, collaborative relationships with CSC staff, leadership, partners, and other external stakeholders;
Successful experience in community outreach, marketing, coalition building, or advocacy;
Highly motivated and self-directed, including the ability to work independently, to take the lead role on assigned projects, and to multi-task effectively while maintaining attention to detail, accuracy of work product, and meeting deadlines;
Team player, creative thinker, effective problem-solver, and customer service orientation;
General administrative skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Project management software experience a plus;
A valid driver’s license;
Experience with community health education among minority and/or underserved communities a plus;
Ability to speak and write in Spanish or other non-English language a plus; and
Experience with survey research, focus groups, public health research, marketing research, or using SPSS or other statistical software a plus
