The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), a national not-for-profit organization representing more than 93,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services, is seeking a Director for our Division of Animal and Public Health (DAPH) in our Public Policy Strategic Business Unit (SBU). The position is located in our Headquarters Office in Schaumburg, IL, a northwest suburb of Chicago.
Reporting directly to the Chief Veterinary Officer, this key position is responsible for providing the creative vision, subject matter expertise, and leadership that is required to plan, develop, implement, and manage association activities that are supported by the Division. The Director makes recommendations to the Chief Veterinary Officer regarding actions that support the Association’s strategic objectives for member services related to animal and public health, with a focus on proactive and timely delivery of policies, programs, and resources that are innovative, thoughtfully developed, and deliver clear member value. The Director will also have primary responsibility for support of the association’s activities related to pharmaceutical and medical device policy and compliance, including drugs (both brand name and generic), biologics, vaccines, natural health products, and medical devices. Other topics and areas currently encompassed by “animal and public health” include animal health and disease, food safety (animal products and animal feeds), agricultural production, emergency preparedness and response, aquatic veterinary medicine, environmental concerns, and occupational safety. The Director leads and supports DAPH staff in working collaboratively and effectively with volunteer entities, staff in other functional areas within the Public Policy SBU, and staff across the organization to achieve approved objectives.
Experience with pharmaceutical policy and compliance is required, and a DVM/VMD degree is preferred. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 7 years’ applicable experience, with demonstrated scientific understanding of the topics for which the Division is responsible. If the candidate holds a DVM/VMD, s/he must be an AVMA member in good standing. Must be a collaborative, enthusiastic and team-oriented leader skilled in diplomatic facilitation of consensus among multiple perspectives. We seek an individual who is innovative, proactive, professional, accountable and results-driven. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong proactive project management skills are a must. Must have strong computer skills and the ability to interact with the scientific and non-scientific community. Approximately 20% travel.
