Essential Job Duties:
The Instructional Designer works closely with faculty, media developers, project coordinators, and other instructional professionals to design and develop courses and learning tools that build on effective practices and meet the unique needs of each project.
This position reports to the Associate Director for Instructional Design & Development and is part of the Instructional Design team within Instructional Innovation Services. The Instructional Design team provides leadership in the area of research-based instructional design, including the creation of engaging and effective learning materials and activities, the development of assessment techniques, and the pedagogical design of learning technology solutions. The team provides consultation and course creation services to the University as a whole as well as within DELTA itself. The production environment for this position is collaborative and team-oriented.
Designs and develops effective courses, including web content, interactive exercises, assessments, and online communication mechanisms in collaboration with faculty, multimedia specialists, instructional designers, and other instructional professionals.
Provides instructional design and course development expertise to online course development, large-course redesign, and blended / hybrid learning efforts.
Applies research-based principles and standards for quality online and blended course design.
Partners with other production colleagues, development teams, and content experts in researching, brainstorming, developing, implementing and evaluating innovative and pedagogically-sound solutions for addressing instructional challenges.
Provides leadership and project management for assigned course production projects including Online and Distance Education course development and enhancement, blended/hybrid learning design, and instructional tool and template creation.
Guides faculty members in the analysis, design, and development of effective courses and instructional programs.
Builds positive working relationships with staff members across the organization.
Consults with faculty on needs assessment, course redesign, and evaluation of effectiveness of technologies and techniques in the teaching and learning process.
Gathers and reports on evidence of impact from instructional innovations on student success, course and departmental efficiency, the furtherance of University, College, Departmental, and DELTA strategic goals.
Researches and keeps abreast of trends in the areas of instructional design, teaching and learning with technology, distance education, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Excellent interpersonal and business communication skills (including written and presentational).
Ability to work in a team production environment and multidisciplinary design process.
Ability to establish collegial relationships with faculty and staff.
Knowledge of emerging technologies as related to teaching and learning.
Awareness of usability and accessibility considerations in instructional design.
High level of independence and initiative.
Two years experience working with faculty in a higher education setting.
Two years experience in a related production environment.
Experience in designing and developing complete distance education courses using distributed / distance technologies either individually or in collaboration with others.
Experience with blended/hybrid learning design and large-course redesign approaches.
Experience with enterprise learning technologies in use at NC State (e.g. Moodle, Mediasite, Top Hat, etc.)
Proficiency using multimedia hardware, software, and equipment.
Advanced certifications or education beyond Master's degree level.
