The Vanderbilt UniversityEnglish Language Center (VU ELC) is seeking to fill the instructor position ofa part-time, partial-year Language Teaching Specialist (LTS) to teach in 1-to-1speaking and writing consultations and to develop educational resources forindividuals who have a first language other than English. In collaboration withVU ELC leadership, the LTS position facilitates the development, implementation,and evaluation of organizational programming to improve language-instructionoutcomes for Vanderbilt University international students, faculty, and staff.Appointments are for ten months (July through April) and are renewable based onan evaluation of performance.
The Vanderbilt UniversityEnglish Language Center (ELC) provides English-language support for individualswho have a first language other than English and who are enrolled or working atVanderbilt University. Our role is to help you achieve the most from yourVanderbilt experience by providing quality, individualized English-languageinstruction.
Duties and Responsibilities
Consults students in1-to-1 speaking and writing consultations: prepares consultation plans, designsand gathers materials, structures activities; provides feedback for academicspeaking, pronunciation, and academic writing; evaluates student achievementand progress; and, prepares reports for submission to the Director.
Develops educationalresources for individuals who have a first language other than English.
As needed, overseesdesignated area of programming in collaboration with other ELC instructors.
Participates in VU andELC meetings and functions as they pertain to ELC programming.
As needed, plans andteaches language classes: prepares lesson plans; designs and gathers materials;structures activities; offers feedback on assignments; evaluates classes,student achievement, and progress; prepares reports for submission to the Director.
Holds office hours formeetings with students, faculty, and staff.
Performs other relatedduties as assigned.
Profile of an Ideal Candidate
MA in Applied Linguistics,TESOL, or related field is necessary.
Demonstrated excellencein teaching a variety of EAP courses of all skills.
Ability to developeducational resources–including digital resources.
Ability to designcontent-based and/or project-based syllabi, activities, and tasks.
Knowledge oflanguage-assessment procedures.
Understanding ofsecond-language-acquisition processes and challenges.
Excellent interpersonalskills and organizational skills, including ability to work cooperatively withculturally and linguistically diverse students, staff, and faculty.
Proficiency in the useof technology in the classroom.
