The Associate Director of Communications, reporting to the Senior Director of Communications, will provide communications expertise and coordination to Smarter Balanced staff, as well as to member states related to the work of the consortium. The ideal candidate possesses experience in K-12 and/or higher education, as well as experience communicating about learning standards and assessments. The successful candidate will independently oversee a comprehensive communications program requiring a wide variety of communications media, including marketing, written, editing, visual, digital and electronic. The Associate Director of Communications, in collaboration with senior leadership, will identify communications challenges and assist in the development and implementation of plans to address identified concerns; manage communications' production and review processes for internal communication and communications with members and other key stakeholders; and produce, edit and ensure the accuracy of original textual, digital and visual content in a variety of mediums for a variety of purposes and audiences while ensuring accessibility standards are met.
With staff operating in states across the country, the Associate Director of Communications must be a highly motivated self-starter. This is a role for someone who is ambitious, has impeccable judgement and is ready to make this job their own.

The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium is a public agency supported by 14 members (12 states, one territory and the Bureau of Indian Education). Through the work of thousands of educators, Smarter Balanced created an online assessment system aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), as well as tools for educators to improve teaching and learning. Smarter Balanced is housed at the University of California Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Extension.

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
Knowledge and understanding of design concepts, various media, and commonly used Website content management applications.
Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long and short term strategic communication plans.
Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
This is a remote position, which requires employees to work from a home office and be available to travel, when needed.
