The Hoover Institution Library & Archives at Stanford University is seeking a knowledgeable, dynamic, innovative, and service-oriented professional for the position of Assistant Archivist for Communications and Outreach. The appointment is for an initial two-year limited term, with the possibility of renewal. This is a career track position.

The Assistant Archivist for Communications and Outreach is responsible for overseeing public-facing programs at Hoover Library & Archives, including classroom education, book and news publications, inter-departmental communications, web content and development, and publicity campaigns for Library & Archives activities.
Under the direction of the Hoover Library & Archives Director, the Assistant Archivist for Communications and Outreach will assist the director in a variety of communications, development, and web initiatives; conduct research and reference activities; and participate in an active outreach program showcasing the institution's holdings. Duties include leading presentations; teaching classes based on archival materials for the Stanford and local community; overseeing the Library & Archives book series; and producing newsletters and development materials for the Library & Archives.
Introduce a wide variety of individuals and groups to the archival collections and services. Work with Hoover curators and Stanford faculty to develop robust educational and instructional programs based on primary sources; lead class and other visits to the Library & Archives based on twentieth- and twenty-first-century themes and events and create instructional materials based on Library & Archives holdings; contribute ideas, plans, and/or content to Hoover Institution publications highlighting Library & Archives collections.
Help to build and increase access to the archival collections.
With the Library & Archives Director, develop, implement, and assess comprehensive marketing and communication initiatives for the Library & Archives, including internal and external promotion strategies; promote Library & Archives resources to the community of historians and other scholars, based on knowledge of and research among the holdings; liaise with Hoover Institution Communications, Marketing, and Development departments, and others, as necessary, to create and edit promotional content highlighting the Library & Archives.
Provide project management support to the Library & Archives Director for a variety of development projects to motivate prospective financial donors and steward existing donors by reporting on the impact of their gifts, including informal stewardship updates, proposals, and presentations based on library principles and practices. Provide project management assistance for other initiatives as needed.
Conduct research and analysis of the Library & Archives, including compiling, analyzing, and presenting compelling data and narratives for the Director; support the Library & Archives Silas Palmer Fellowship and Research Support Program and other programs as directed.
Oversee the development of the Library & Archives website and social media presence, including coordinating and generating new content, updating legacy content, and executing other web-related activities as needed; maintain active presence on the Library & Archives website by participating in its social media outreach. The Assistant Archivist for Communications & Outreach will manage a part-time staff member dedicated to web and social media maintenance and development.
Under the Reference Archivist's direction, provide reference and outreach services to Stanford faculty, staff, students, and the general public, remotely or in person.
Conduct tours of the archives and presentations of archival materials for Hoover and Stanford staff, potential donors, and a variety of visitors.
Assist with conference and exhibition preparation.
Contribute to institutional initiatives and projects.
* Other duties may also be assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience:
Advanced degree in communications, twentieth- or twenty-first-century history, English, public policy, or a relevant academic discipline, and two or more years of work experience in a large manuscript or archival repository or related institution, or a combination of education and relevant experience. MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school or MA with archival concentration, archival management certificate, or related subject specialty preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrated understanding of academic libraries desired.
Superb written and oral communication skills, with extensive writing and public speaking experience.
Demonstrated project management abilities and excellent organizational and design skills.
Ability to interact with a diverse staff and public; work collegially with supervisor, peers, faculty, and other staff; and exhibit understanding of importance of public service to both the Hoover Institution and outside clientele.
First-rate analytical and interpretive skills.
Knowledge of one or more foreign languages, particularly Japanese, Chinese, Russian, or Polish, highly desirable.
Ability to work independently, show initiative, exhibit mature judgment and discretion, and to organize and manage team-based projects.
Demonstrated research experience.
Administrative aptitude and strong recordkeeping and information technology skills.
Knowledge of varied computer applications, especially PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Trello, and Drupal or other content management systems.
Experience with social media outreach, including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, SoundCloud.
Established understanding of the principles of archival theory, practice, standards, and proper handling of materials.
Demonstrated ability to work collegially as a team member, as well as independently.
Considerable judgment, discretion, and initiative.
Experience in training and directing the work of staff and students in public services.
Commitment to planning, implementing, and assessing user-centered services.
Ability to analyze, learn, and implement evolving technologies.
Commitment to archival public service, including a keen interest in promoting the use and appreciation of archival materials.
Sit a great deal of the time; perform desk-based computer tasks.
Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 15 pounds.
Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
Occasionally use a telephone, operate hand controls.
Must be able to push and maneuver a fully loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.
