The Department of Allied Health Sciences, in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources at the University of Connecticut, invites applications for a faculty appointment as Lecturer. This is a full-time, 11-month, non-tenure track appointment with a target start date of June 1, 2019. The position comes with a competitive salary, benefits and is renewable annually based on evaluations of satisfactory performance.
The Department of Allied Health Sciences, has a vibrant, multidisciplinary faculty dedicated to advancing knowledge through research, teaching, advising, and community service. The department is in a period of expansion, recruiting 10 faculty in three years to meet growing student needs. With 29 faculty, over 750 undergraduates, and 28 graduate students, we actively engage in educating and training the next generation of health professionals. The Department offers an undergraduate major in Allied Health Sciences with multiple concentrations, including Public Health and Health Promotion and Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety; three nationally-accredited health programs (Dietetics, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Diagnostic Genetic Sciences); two master’s programs (Health Promotion Sciences, Health Care Genetics); and a PhD program in Health Promotion Sciences. A number of faculty in the Department also conduct grant-funded research in obesity, HIV/AIDS, digital health, behavioral genomics, nutrition, food policy, cancer prevention, and public health. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As Lecturer/Advisor, the successful candidate will:
Teach undergraduate courses each semester as assigned
Provide comprehensive academic advising forundergraduate Allied Health Sciences majors as it pertains to formulating career goals and planning academic coursework
Maintain an assigned caseload of advisees and be a resource to students who are exploring a health career
Participate in the Department’s recruitment and orientation of new students, which may include occasional weekend/evening hours
Serve as a resource and maintain cooperative relationships with Department faculty and staff, and other University offices, making referrals as appropriate
Participate in an active program of professional development consistent with personal and professional goals
Serve on Department, College and/or University committees
Other duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will also be expected to support the Department’s efforts to recruit and retain students from diverse backgrounds and broaden participation among members of underrepresented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and demonstrate leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.
Master’s degree in health-related field or in higher education
Professional experience in health-related field or in higher education
Teaching-related experience which demonstrates ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, including small group and/or large group presentations
Demonstrated excellence in oral, written and interpersonal skills
Terminal degree in health-related field or higher education
Two years’ work experience in a health-related field
College-level teaching experience as instructor of record
Experience in an advising or mentoring capacity in healthcare or higher education
Ability to build upon and/or expand the diverse curriculum within the Department of Allied Health Sciences
Experience in understanding and contributing to cultures of inclusive excellence
This 11-month appointment as Lecturer (non-tenure track) has an anticipated start date of June 1, 2019 with a primary academic appointment at the Storrs campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
