Job Requisition Number: 26425. The Breakthrough Listen Initiative, funded by the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, is the most powerful, comprehensive and intensive scientific search ever undertaken for signs of intelligent life beyond Earth. The project is using the Green Bank radio telescope in West Virginia, the Parkes Telescope in Australia and the MeerKat Array in South Africa to search for radio transmissions from advanced civilizations. In addition, the Automated Planet Finder at Lick Observatory is being used to search for optical laser transmissions from other technological civilizations.
This position involves design, construction, and testing of new high-speed digital electronics and novel signal processing software to be deployed at the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa, in support of the Breakthrough Listen Initiative.
•Provides full range of professional engineering services to Breakthrough Listen on MeerKAT. Meets with research staff in the design and development phase of the instrumentation to ensure the desired science goals are achievable. •Determines specifications and parameters of the instrument, hardware configuration, deployment schedule, interface with the telescope, etc. •Performs design, construction, assembly, testing, and commissioning of the Listen backend in the digital lab at UC Berkeley and onsite in the Karoo Array Processor Building in South Africa. •Provides engineering information and advice to Principal Investigators and/or other faculty and research personnel with administrative responsibility for the research program or teaching facility. Liaises with research staff from the South African partner and other international collaborators. •Gathers, analyzes, prepares and summarizes annual and semi-annual reports, technical documents, and white papers. Provides relevant information to the science team for inclusion in scientific articles. •Provides direction and guidance to lower level R&D Engineers. •Implements related business processes including coordination of hardware purchases, shipping, deployment logistics, etc.•Thorough knowledge associated with independently performing the full range of engineering professional design work. •Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments. •Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards. •Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations. •Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills. •Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions. •Ability to lead and influence others. •Experience working as part of a team on large software- and hardware-focused projects •Fluency in developing and implementing modern high-speed data processing systems including GPUs
Education/Training: •Bachelor's degree in related area or equivalent combination of experience/training This is a full-time, contract position with an approximate end date of June 30, 2021 that will be eligible for full UC Benefits.
