Mission Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center offers a rotating small animal internship with emphasis on internal medicine, surgery, critical care and emergency medicine, cardiology, oncology, ophthalmology, dentistry and oral surgery. Our internship program is supported by specialists in internal medicine, emergency/critical care, surgery, ophthalmology, dentistry/oral surgery and six emergency doctors. The program entails participation in daily rounds with specialists, primary case management with specialist supervision, emergency case management and stabilization and direct interaction with each specialist on referral cases. Interns participate in weekly journal club, radiology rounds and morbidity and mortality conferences. Interns will construct and present a one hour continuing education lecture on a topic of their choosing for local referring veterinarians. Publication is encouraged but not required. Mission Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center is a 26 year old, well established 24 hour critical care and referral hospital located in the central Kansas City metropolitan area. Our state of the art facility is fully equipped with in house laboratory diagnostics ( e.g. blood gas, chemistry, electrolyte analyzers, coagulation evaluation, hematology, cytology), imaging equipment (digital radiology, computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, color-flow Doppler, endoscopy, and monitoring tools (direct and indirect blood pressure, CVP, capnography, pulse oximetry, diagnostic and continuous EKG. We offer a wide range of referral services including advanced imaging and radiographic procedures (on site CT scanner, referral MRI facility nearby, nuclear medicine (on-site I- 131 ) and advanced orthopedic, soft tissue and minimally invasive surgery. Intensive 24 hour monitoring, respiratory assistance (including multiple oxygen supplementation modalities) and nutritional support such as total and partial parenteral nutrition are available to our patients. We are an emergency and specialty care facility, therefore we do not provide routine preventative health care. Intern candidates should possess excellent work ethic and enthusiasm. DVM/VMD or equivalent is required along with the ability to obtain Kansas veterinary medical licensure.
