The Robert E. Kennedy Library is embarking on a Digital Publishing project to investigate non-traditional methods to publish scholarship and is seeking an enterprising masters-level professional who brings a passion for vibrant publishing methodologies and emerging platforms. The Library Digital Publishing Fellow will assist with this project to explore the intersection between Cal Poly scholarship and non-traditional publishing methods. The successful Fellow will demonstrate excellent communication, project management skills, and the ability to multitask in a creative and innovative environment.
Under general direction of the Exhibits and Campus Art Curator, the Library Digital Publishing Fellow will help investigate, develop, and pilot digital publishing approaches for library assets with a primary focus on faculty exhibit catalogs. The fellow will contribute to new directions in the open dissemination of digital materials resulting from the Creative Works program's exhibition, scholarship, research, and educational activities. The project's expected outcomes include development of best practices, prototyping digital catalogs, and program recommendations for publishing digital projects.
Housed in the Academic Services department, the Creative Works program rethinks access to scholarship by transforming the immersive on-site exhibits generated by faculty and students and re-imagines them into a digital exhibit catalog format. The Digital Publishing Project aims to raise the visibility and enhance access to Cal Poly scholarship by transposing the immersive on-site exhibits generated by faculty and students into a digital representation, such as a digital exhibit catalog. Digital publishing opens new access points for exhibit catalogs, and presents a responsive publishing alternative which makes the research of exhibit scholars (typically faculty and students) available to a wider and diverse online audience. By creating a non-traditional pathway for publishing scholarly research, this pilot project enables the library to play an active role in strengthening Cal Poly's scholarly communication system and to ensure that Learn by Doing research is widely disseminated and preserved.
The library's fellow position is designed to facilitate and launch new initiatives and collaborations; and includes opportunities for presentations and workshop development.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Masters level degree such as ALA-accredited MLS, or comparable experience with relevant advanced degree. Official certified transcripts of highest degree will be required of finalist(s).
Up to one year or equivalent of work experience in a library, archive, museum, or in publishing.
Familiarity with a variety of digital publishing concepts, practices, and procedures.
Understanding of and appreciation for the ways new technologies are transforming academic libraries, and willingness to pursue innovative approaches to challenges and opportunities.
Familiarity with digital repository/publishing platforms.
Strong interpersonal skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate across a diverse population.
Demonstrated ability to develop and foster effective working relationships within a diverse and fast-paced academic environment.
Ability to work independently and to collaborate and work effectively with a broad set of colleagues and library users.
Proofreading skills and familiarity with the editing and production of publications.
Ability to research, develop and communicate a strong vision of the library's role in contemporary and emerging scholarly communications and alternative publishing models.
Ability to develop partnerships across campus; and provide presentations and/or workshop development related to pilot project goals
